Tim Scott says he refuses to be ‘treated as a second-class citizen’ in warm-up for possible 2024 White House bid

Senator Tim Scott could be getting closer to pulling the trigger on a 2024 White House run, delivering a stirring speech to South Carolina Republicans in Charleston only two miles down the road from where former Palmetto State governor Nikki Haley, who has already announced her own presidential bid, held her first campaign rally.

In his Thursday night speech at the Charleston County Republicans’ fifth annual Black History Month banquet, Scott vehemently defended being a Republican of color, something that has made him the target of ongoing vile racist attacks from Democrats and leftists.

“Listen, I understand being treated as a second-class citizen because of the color of my skin,’ he said. ‘I refuse, I refuse to be treated as a second-class citizen because of the color of my party,” Senator Scott said in what could be an early preview of a stump speech if he chooses to jump into what is expected to be a crowded race for the party’s nomination with the primary season only months away from kicking off.

Speaking to local reporters prior to the speech, Scott was hesitant to add to speculation that he will declare his candidacy, instead saying that he planned to embark on a “Faith in America” listening tour in two critical early primary states, his own as well as Iowa which despite being bumped from the front of the list a Democratic Party looking to solidify President Biden’s position as its candidate, remains the first key contest for GOP hopefuls.

“We’ll take our time, listen to the American people and talk about the issues that we think are really important,” he said. “I think it’s time for an optimistic, positive message that is anchored in conservative principles.”

In his speech, Scott told the audience that they had “a lot of reasons” for celebrating Black History Month, putting forth a positive alternative message on slavery than that presented by Democrats and the “woke” left through their retelling of the nation’s history through the jaundiced lens of Critical Race Theory teachings and the New York Times’ “1619 Project” which offer the gullible a bastardized version of the past to falsely promote the idea that America was founded on white supremacist principles.

“If you stop at our original sin, you have not started the story of America,” Scott argued. “Because the story of America is not defined by our original sin, the story is defined by our redemption.”

“We have made tremendous progress and it’s time that we as a people celebrate the progress we have made,” he said, using his own family history of going from “Cotton to Congress’ in just two generations, his grandfather once picked cotton in South Carolina fields.

“The American Dream is going from Cotton to Congress in one lifetime. There is no other country on earth where that’s possible, and I have faith that the future is only getting brighter,” Scott tweeted on Thursday.

“We can’t lose faith in the American Dream. In fact, we need that faith now more than ever. We need to have faith in one another, and faith that we all want what’s best for the future of this great nation,” he added.

“There is a way for us to unify this country around basic principles that lead us forward, but we have to put behind us a lie that this is the worst time in American history — only if American history started today,” he said.

“I’m sick and tired of people telling me how bad it is,” Scott continued, adding: “I’m not here to suggest things can’t get better. I’m going to work every single day to make sure all Americans play on a level playing field. But today is not 1865. Today is not 1923. …”

Scott also gave a shout-out to a very special person in his life who attended the event.

In another sign that Scott may be warming up for a presidential run, he declined to endorse Haley, his fellow South Carolinian.

“Next question,” he told The Post and Courier when the question was posed to him on whether he would offer up his endorsement.
