A whole herd of Democrats in the House of Representatives and the Senate stampeded to propose socialist legislation this week that would provide all students from pre-school through high school three meals a day and a snack at no charge regardless of income.

In a rallying cry that it was for the children, Democrats claimed the free food is needed due to “record numbers” of American kids who are struggling with hunger. They are ironically doing so ostensibly because of Democratic policies put in place. It’s their version of a “chicken in every pot” for students as the left looks to increase spending while the country slumps into a deep recession heading for depression.
The schools have to pay for the food, which actually is paid for by taxpayers. If this proposal is implemented, there will be no recouping that stunning cost. It could actually cause schools to close down but never mind all that. Do it for the kids!
Democratic bills contend that Congress will appropriate whatever money is needed to fund the new program, or the funding will come from spending offsets or higher taxes. Exactly. They will print more money and raise taxes which will, in turn, make it harder for families to feed their children. Pesky unintended consequences will bite… hard.
“It is an international embarrassment that today, in the richest country in the history of the world, we are seeing record numbers of children and youth struggling with hunger on a daily basis,” Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) declared, according to Fox News. He is unsurprisingly one of the sponsors of the Senate legislation.
What they’re proposing is universal free food for all kids, regardless of income. It’s unnecessary and not free as taxpayers are paying for it. The schools already have free and reduced lunch for needy students.

“Universal school meals is not just commonsense policy; it is also extremely popular,” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) claimed. She is the lead sponsor of the bill in the House which is also not a surprise.
“Nearly 75% of Americans support permanent universal school meals — including the majority of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. It’s time to listen to the demands of our constituents and at long last make school meals free and universal for all kids,” Omar said making a blatantly false and stunningly uninformed claim.
“Universal School Meals Program Act” is meant to put an end to “school lunch shaming.” Currently, students are required to show they are eligible for a free meal. The bill is a Democrat’s dream come true providing social justice in the cafeteria.
Every child, including Elijah, deserves access to healthy, nutritious food at school.
Hunger is a political condition. And we can stop this policy failure in its tracks. It starts with universal free school meals. https://t.co/iRDjtzAgXr

“Children have been publicly shamed for not being able to afford lunch, and as USDA reported, lunch shaming is a problem throughout the country, including withholding grades for school meal debt,” Democrats proclaimed. “Some schools resorted to heinous scare tactics to collect school meal debt; one school threatened to take away parents’ children and another school marked children’s skin with an ‘I Need Lunch Money’ stamp.”
As long as they are firing up the printing presses, the bill also seeks to reimburse schools for delinquent school lunch debt that has accrued under the current system.
Showing how they know nothing of the real world or economics in general, Democrats argue that providing universal free meals to all students will cause the cost of said meals to fall. That’s not how supply and demand work, however, it is how socialism works.
“Our bill puts an end to the burdensome application paperwork by no longer requiring a Free and Reduced Lunch Program application in order to participate in the program,” the summary of the bill declares.
Predictably, Democrats are using the pandemic as an excuse to implement the socialist program. A statement from the sponsors of the bill claims that offering schools the flexibility to deliver school meals to a wider range of kids helped tens of millions of kids stay fed. They are warning now that the pandemic has ended that access to free food for kids is threatened.
“What we’ve seen during this pandemic is that a universal approach to school meals works,” Sanders falsely proclaimed. “We cannot go backwards. It is time for Congress to pass this legislation to ensure no student goes hungry again.”
Five states including California, Colorado, Maine, Minnesota, and New Mexico have passed laws to provide free universal school meals and more than a dozen others support similar policies, according to The Guardian.
