A top Trump administration official revealed that the admin offered Canada the “best deal” ever right before America’s northern neighbor rejected it.
Appearing on Fox News’ “Special Report” on Thursday, President Donald Trump’s top trade advisor, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, stressed repeatedly that Canada walked away from the “best deal in the world.”
His appearance on Fox News came days after Canada suddenly turned down a pivotal trade deal moments before it was to be finalized.

“They came to us, they said we want a deal, and I said, if you’re interested in a deal, we can work on this,” Greer recalled. “And I told them what we could deliver. I said, we could try to give you the best deal in the world on steel, aluminum, autos, and help you out on lumber.”
“And we managed to move the levers of our government to give them that deal,” he continued, noting that President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney even shook hands on it “one evening.”
But then something happened.
“And then when they came back, they wanted more,” Greer said. “They wanted more tariff relief. It wasn’t good enough to have the best deal in the world. They wanted it to be even better and that kind of thing. These were things we couldn’t accommodate.”
Canada subsequently suspended all trade talks on Aug. 21. And then all of a sudden, Canada’s top leaders appeared on TV to trash-talk the U.S.

“When Canada backed away, their leadership went on TV the next day and said, ‘ We’re suspending negotiations; we’ve been attacked,’ etc.,” Greer recalled. “Again, this is for a country that sends the vast majority of their goods duty-free to the United States, where they’ve retaliated against us.”
“Remember, Canada has been retaliating against us since last year. They banned the sale of American liquor on shelves. They’ve excluded American companies from procurement. Since even before the second Trump term, they’ve limited our ability to sell dairy into Canada,” he added.
Asked whether a deal remains possible, Greer said yes but stressed that the ball remains in Canada’s court.
“We offered them the best deal,” he said. “They looked at it square in the face and turned around. They said they’re suspending talks, not something I announced.”
He went on to compare Canada’s intransigence to Mexico’s willingness to play ball.

“I met with the Mexican trade minister this afternoon, and we have very frequent conversations at the highest levels,” Greer revealed. “Over the past year, we have given the Mexican officials many things we’d like them to change in their trade relationship with us, and they’ve been responsive.”
“We have issues on intellectual property. They’ve introduced laws to fix IP, to protect American creators. We have issues with security. It’s not specifically trade, but they’ve been responsive. They are eager to do things to protect North America from Chinese imports. They have raised tariffs on China and Vietnam to protect our economy from dumping and subsidizing,” he added.
The interview concluded with Greer being asked whether the lack of a deal will affect the midterms given that “there are 19 states that have Canada as the largest import-export market.”
“So the number one trading partner of the United States is the United States,” Greer pushed back. “Most of our trade and commerce activity happens within our borders.”
