The Trump administration is reportedly considering hiring New York City (NYC) Mayor Eric Adams and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa to pull them out of the NYC mayoral race.
The goal is to clear the field for former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whom many believe is the city’s best chance at defeating Democrat/communist-light mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani, for his part, has already begun using this report to his political advantage:
Today’s news confirms it: Cuomo is Trump’s choice for Mayor. The White House is considering jobs for Adams and Sliwa to clear the field.
New Yorkers are sick of corrupt politics and backroom deals. No matter who’s running, we will deliver a better future on November 4. https://t.co/20b9abiRck

President Donald Trump is reportedly involved in the discussions.
“He’s very concerned,” top New York state grocer John Catsimatidis told the New York Times. “How do they say it? This is for all the tea in China. This is serious.”
According to a separate source who spoke with Politico, Adams has specifically been offered a position in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The mayor met with President Trump’s team during a visit to Florida on Tuesday, Politico notes, though the White House refused to confirm or deny that the meeting took place.
Adams hasn’t denied meeting with the president’s team. Nor has he said an outright “No” to the prospect of him exiting NYC’s mayoral race.
“I met with some of his team,” he told local media Wednesday morning. “I met with several elected officials, and again, if there’s any changes in this race, I will announce that.”
He stressed that for now, he’s continuing to run.
“To say, ‘Would you take a job in the administration?’ or would I take it somewhere else — that’s hypothetical,” he said. “I’m running for office. And I’m going to finish doing that. I’ve got work to do. I’ve got more ribbons to cut before I finish up this term.”
However, in an official statement, Adam’s campaign spokesperson, Todd Shapiro, pretty much denied everything.
“Although Mayor Adams has been the most pro-housing mayor in New York City’s history, at no time did he ask for — nor was he offered — a job at HUD,” he said.
“Over the last few years, the Mayor has shown his ability to block out the noise and stay focused on delivering for New Yorkers. … And if the HUD job does open, Andrew Cuomo held that position before and can always continue where he left off,” he added.
The administration is targeting Adams and Sliwa because both are trailing Cuomo in the polls.

Politico notes that “Adams’ electability began to take a hit when,” after he was hit with federal corruption charges, the Trump administration moved to clear all of the charges. This didn’t please NYC residents, many of whom are NOT partial to the president.
Meanwhile, Cuomo has, for his part, denied speaking with either Trump or his team about the NYC mayoral race. Privately, however, he’s been rooting for the president’s intervention.
“At an August fundraiser in the Hamptons, he told supporters that Trump and fellow GOP leaders would minimize Sliwa’s impact by telling Republicans not to waste their vote on him,” Politico notes.
Simultaneously, over on the social media platform X, a number of critics have been calling for Adams and Sliwa to exit the race so that Cuomo can save everybody from Mamdani. One critic even suggested that Cuomo offer Sliwa a job in his administration:
Eric Adams please listen to your heart and drop out, Cuomo should then call Sliwa and offer him deputy mayor or another position he chooses and endorse. NYC must come together NOW

Of Andrew Cuomo, Eric Adams, and Curtis Sliwa, two of them need to drop out immediately.
If they all stay in, none of them have a chance.
They’re putting their egos over New Yorkers.

There’s just no way Eric Adams can be competitive in the race to be mayor. Sliwa and Adam’s must drop out. There’s no road to victory for them. The only candidate that can win against Mamdani is Andrew Cuomo. Poll after Poll after Poll has proven this. @BillAckman get Adams out !

For those who don’t know math :
Cuomo has the highest favorability among Jewish voters in the city. He has the best chance to win.
Sliwa and Adams need to drop out and endorse Cuomo. Enough of this bullshit. https://t.co/bXvwgxhpwY
