The Trump administration could begin withholding funds for the Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in most Democrat-controlled states for refusing to provide information on who’s receiving government assistance.
Tens of millions of people receive SNAP, more commonly known as food stamps, which was briefly interrupted last month during the “Schumer shutdown” with Democrats using the vital nutritional aid as “leverage” to get their way.
Now, once again, the left-wing party will be responsible for the loss of benefits weeks before Christmas because its leaders refuse to cooperate with providing the data that could help the government identify fraud within the program.
During Tuesday’s meeting of President Donald J. Trump’s Cabinet, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said that funds could begin to be withheld next week over the noncompliant blue states’ refusal to provide information, including the immigration status of recipients, giving the impression that they have something to hide.
NO DATA, NO MONEY — it’s that simple.
If a state won’t share data on criminal use of SNAP benefits, it won’t get a dollar of federal SNAP administrative funding.

“In February of this year, we asked for all the states for the first time to turn over their data to the federal government to let the USDA partner with them to root out this fraud, to make sure that those who really need food stamps are getting them, but also to ensure that the American taxpayer is protected,” Rollins said.
The secretary said that twenty-nine red states provided the information to assist the government with rooting out fraud, but that the blue states aren’t complying.
“But 21 states, including California, New York, and Minnesota — blue states — continue to say no,” she continued. “So as of next week, we have begun and will begin to stop moving federal funds into those states until they comply, and they tell us, and they allow us to partner with them to root out this fraud and to protect the American taxpayer.”
“As Joe Biden was working to buy an election, a year ago, he increased food stamp program funding by 40 percent,” Rollins pointed out.
“Earlier this year, USDA put states on notice reminding them illegal immigrants and certain non-citizens CAN NOT receive SNAP benefits,” the agriculture secretary said in a Monday post to X. “Right now, we are requiring states to turn over recipient data to fight waste, fraud, and abuse. Even though 22 blue states have refused to provide the data, we are using every tool to compel their compliance.”
“WHAT are they hiding? WHO are they hiding?” Rollins asked.
“USDA established a SNAP integrity team to analyze not only data provided by states, but to scrub all available information to end indiscriminate welfare fraud. 28 States and Guam joined us in this fight, but states like California, New York, and Minnesota, among 19 other blue States, keep fighting us,” a USDA spokesperson said in a Tuesday statement to media outlets.
“We have sent Democrat States yet another request for data, and if they fail to comply, they will be provided with a formal warning that USDA will pull their administrative funds,” the agency said.
