Trump admin. releases thousands of MLK assassination documents

Thousands of documents related to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have been released by the Trump administration.

Making good on President Donald Trump’s vow to release previously-classified documents on King,  President John F. Kennedy, and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced the latest with the records on the 1968 assassination of the civil rights leader.

Gabbard released over 230,000 pages of documents in accordance with Trump’s previous executive order.

“The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our mission to deliver complete transparency on this pivotal and tragic event in our nation’s history. I extend my deepest appreciation to the King family for their support.”

Bernice and Martin Luther King III, children of the slain civil rights leader, released a statement.

“We recognize that the release of documents concerning the assassination of our father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has long been a subject of interest, captivating public curiosity for decades,” the statement read. “As the children of Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, his tragic death has been an intensely personal grief – a devastating loss for his wife, children, and the granddaughter he never met – an absence our family has endured for over 57 years. We ask those who engage with the release of these files to do so with empathy, restraint, and respect for our family’s continuing grief.”

King’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, expressed her gratitude for the release of the documents.

“I am grateful to President Trump and DNI Gabbard for delivering on their pledge of transparency in the release of these documents on the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr,” she said.. “My uncle lived boldly in pursuit of truth and justice, and his enduring legacy of faith continues to inspire Americans to this day. While we continue to mourn his death, the declassification and release of these documents are a historic step towards the truth that the American people deserve.”

“The American people deserve answers decades after the horrific assassination of one of our nation’s great leaders,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said. “The Department of Justice is proud to partner with Director Gabbard and the ODNI at President Trump’s direction for this latest disclosure.”

According to a DNI press release:

The documents include details about the FBI’s investigation into the assassination of MLK — including the discussion of potential leads, internal FBI memos detailing the progress of the case, and documents related to James Earl Ray’s former cellmate, who stated he discussed with Ray an alleged assassination plot. Additionally, as James Earl Ray fled the country following the assassination, the release includes unique foreign evidence from a Canadian police department. Never-before-seen CIA records outline overseas intelligence on the international hunt for the prime suspect in the assassination.

“Unlike the majority of the JFK assassination files — which were identified and released in accordance with federal law — the MLK files in today’s release had never been digitized and sat collecting dust in facilities across the federal government for decades, until today,” the DNI press release read.
