Trump announces return of last living American held hostage by Hamas

The last living American being held hostage by Hamas is set to be released, according to President Donald Trump.

The president announced in a Truth Social post on Sunday that after nearly two years in captivity, Edan Alexander “is coming home to his family.”

“I am happy to announce that Edan Alexander, an American citizen who has been held hostage since October 2023, is coming home to his family,” Trump wrote.

“I am grateful to all those involved in making this monumental news happen. This was a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones,” he continued.

“Hopefully this is the first of those final steps necessary to end this brutal conflict. I look very much forward to that day of celebration!” Trump wrote.

The Hamas terror group announced on Sunday that it was “in contact with the U.S. administration in recent days.”

“The movement has shown a high level of positivity, and the Israeli soldier with dual American citizenship, [Edan] Alexander, will be released as part of the steps being taken toward a ceasefire, the opening of border crossings, and the entry of aid and relief for our people in the Gaza Strip,” the organization said in a statement.

Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff “confirmed late Sunday in a message to AP that Hamas had agreed to release Alexander as a goodwill gesture toward Trump,” the Associated Press reported. “Witkoff told the AP that Hamas’ goal in releasing Alexander was to restart talks on a ceasefire, the release of additional hostages and a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza before Israel carries out a threatened total takeover of the territory.”

A Hamas leader in Gaza told the outlet that the terror group is ready to “immediately start intensive negotiations.”

Reacting to the news about the imminent release of Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli soldier and American citizen, Vice President JD Vance wrote, “Pray that Hamas follows through and Edan gets to come home.”

“Should this release be confirmed, the release of Edan Alexander must mark the beginning of a comprehensive agreement that will secure the freedom of all remaining hostages,” read a statement from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters. “President Trump, you’ve given the families of all the hostages hope. Please, complete your mission and bring them all home.”
