Following success in Venezuela, President Donald Trump suggested a communist regime could be in store for a “friendly takeover.”
Unapologetically paving ahead with his America First agenda has included the commander-in-chief reasserting America’s dominance on the world stage. When questioned on Friday about potential future steps in the Caribbean, Trump affirmed that Cuba remained in “deep trouble” and requests for help could come with stipulations on who’s in charge.
Departing the White House en route to Texas on Friday, the president fielded questions on the South Lawn which included a number of queries on Cuba. In particular, when asked about a Florida-registered speedboat in Cuban waters upon which four crew members were killed and six injured by the communist nation’s Border Guard earlier in the week, the president asserted, “The Cuban government is talking with us.”
“They’re in a big deal of trouble, as you know. They have no money. They have no anything right now,” continued Trump. “But they’re talking with us, and maybe we’ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba. We could very well end up having a friendly takeover of Cuba.”

The chief executive went on to tease a positive outcome for those living in the U.S. expelled from Cuba. When asked about the potential of regime change in Cuba, Trump expressed, “[Secretary of State] Marco Rubio is dealing on it at a very high level. And, you know, they have no money, they have no oil, they have no food. And it’s really, right now, a nation in deep trouble, and they want our help.”

In January, an executive order called out the national security threat posed by the Cuban government’s alignment with “numerous hostile countries, transnational terrorist groups, and malign actors adverse to the United States, including the Government of the Russian Federation … the People’s Republic of China … the Government of Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.”
The result was an ongoing blockade preventing fuel shipments from making port to offload on the island, exacerbating an energy crisis impacting access to other vital resources like food and healthcare.
“There’s a number of epidemics rippling through the population right now, repression is increasing as the regime feels cornered, and they are not signaling any willingness to negotiate with the United States,” Sebastián Arcos, interim director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University told The Hill. “These people are really, really bad guys, and they have shown this capacity to survive difficult crises.”
“I don’t think they can survive this one,” he asserted.
“What’s going to happen in Cuba is much more difficult to divine than Venezuela,” the FIU interim director said, raising the change in leadership facilitated by the United States apprehension of dictator Nicolás Maduro. “Cuba is a unified ideological leadership, where any deviation from the dogma is severely punished, and no one, therefore, is willing to risk that unless the United States escalates.”
Likewise, University of Texas at Austin’s director of Latin America and Caribbean Energy Program Jorge Piñon suggested to the outlet that if a fuel tanker isn’t permitted entry into Cuba by mid-March, “that’s what we call the zero hour. In other words, that’s it. There’s no inventory, there’s no strategic reserves, that’s it, they’re out of business.”
