Trump backs ‘Tito’ Asfura for Honduran president – announces pardon of former leader

An endorsement for a foreign election brought with it a clemency announcement for a former president, allegedly “treated very harshly and unfairly.”

Sunday, the people of Honduras are expected to get out and vote for national and international figures, including their next president. While President Donald Trump threw his support behind National Party nominee Nasry “Tito” Asfura, he also sought to right a perceived wrong against former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández by pardoning his conviction for cocaine importation and weapons charges during President Joe Biden’s administration.

“Tito will be a Great President, and the United States will work closely with him in order to ensure the success, with all of its potential, of Honduras! Additionally, I will be granting a Full and Complete Pardon to Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez who has been, according to many people that I greatly respect, treated very harshly and unfairly,” wrote the chief executive in a Truth Social Post. “This cannot be allowed to happen, especially now, after Tito Asfura wins the Election, when Honduras will be on its way to Great Political and Financial Success.”

After being extradited to the United States in April 2022, Hernández was convicted on March 8, 2024, and sentenced later that year to serve 45 years in a U.S. federal prison plus five years supervised release and an $8 million fine, a sentence the then-55-year-old would be unlikely to complete.

“As President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez abused his power to support one of the largest and most violent drug trafficking conspiracies in the world, and the people of Honduras and the United States bore the consequences,” asserted then-Attorney General Merrick Garland as the jury trial had concluded Hernández had overseen the import of over 400 tons of cocaine into the United States.

Countering the claims against her husband, attorney and former first lady Ana García Carías had expressed her view that the prosecution had been a plot between the “radical left” and drug traffickers coordinated against Hernández.

She was seen flanked by her children outside the family home in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where they knelt in prayer and thanked God and Trump for seeing to the freedom of the former president.

“Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the miracle of my husband’s freedom … All Glory and Honor is Yours!” said Carías. “Thank you, President Donald Trump, for granting the presidential pardon to Juan Orlando and thereby bringing justice to an innocent. We bless him!”

As to Trump’s backing of Asfura, the president had suggested that any other outcome could mean the end of certain financial support from the United States, wherein taxpayer dollars would not be allocated to bolster failing policies.

“If Tito Asfura wins for President of Honduras, because the United States has so much confidence in him, his Policies, and what he will do for the Great People of Honduras, we will be very supportive. If he doesn’t win, the United States will not be throwing good money after bad, because a wrong Leader can only bring catastrophic results to a country, no matter which country it is,” expressed the commander-in-chief who went on to conclude, “VOTE FOR TITO ASFURA FOR PRESIDENT, AND CONGRATULATIONS TO JUAN ORLANDO HERNANDEZ ON YOUR UPCOMING PARDON. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE HONDURAS GREAT AGAIN!”
