Trump claims Musk told him he’d always voted Republican, says takeover of ‘Fake Twitter’ is ‘probably illegal’

Former President Donald Trump appears to be talking trash about billionaire investor Elon Musk out of what some suspect is jealousy and others believe is good-natured ribbing.

In a Truth Social post published Friday, the former president essentially accused Musk of being a liar, described his purchase of Twitter as “illegal,” and suggested that he was slow in figuring out that the Democrat Party is a “party of hate.”

“Gee, Elon Musk never told me that until now he only voted for Democrats. Actually, it was quite the contrary, but now it seems, with all of his problems with a probably illegal purchase of a crummy phony account loaded company, Fake Twitter, he wants to be a Republican because the Dems are ‘a Party of hate,'” the post reads.

“I could have told him that a long time ago, but actually they are a Party of sickness, greed, corruption & absolutely horrible policy. Good luck Elon, have fun!!!” the post concludes.

The post was published two days after Musk announced on Twitter that he intends to “vote Republican” going forward because the Democrat Party has “become the party of division & hate.”

“In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party. But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican. Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold …,” he tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

The tweet provoked anger and hate from the left, prompting Musk to post an additional tweet a day later saying, “Judging by the relentless hatestream from the far left, this tweet was spot on.”

Trump’s Truth Social post likewise comes amid Musk’s slow-walk purchase of Twitter, which has been delayed in recent days over the billionaire investor’s concerns about all the spam and bots on the social media platform.

What remains unclear is why the former president keeps trash-talking Musk. Earlier this month he wrote on Truth Social that “only a stupid person would buy Twitter for” the price Musk has agreed to. To be fair, he added that “Elon is not a stupid person.”

Yet, on the other hand, Trump’s business associate, Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes, claimed that the former president had privately “encouraged” Musk to buy Twitter. The billionaire investor disputed this in a tweet posted on May 6th, writing that the claim was “false” and that he’d had “no communication, directly or indirectly, with Trump.”

Some believe Trump is jealous of Musk given the billionaire’s newfound prestige among the Republican Party base and his purchase of Twitter.

The problem for Trump is that his alleged jealousy is turning off some of his former voters.

“I was a true Trump fan, but I think he is going to be showing us his real colors soon. I think he is jealous of Musk for getting to much attention and taking it away from him,” one such voter tweeted on Friday.

The other possibility is that Trump is simply engaged in good-natured ribbing. The former president does have a history of poking fun at people, even those he likes.

Plus, it’s not as if the ribbing has been a one-way affair. Recall the jokey tweet that Musk posted last month about how Truth Social should be called “Trumpet” instead. And note that he posted the tweet while drawing attention to Truth Social’s impressive performance on the Apple Store:
