With “one of the sleaziest politicians in history” closing in on potentially winning a Senate seat, former President Donald Trump sounded off on the “mistake” the GOP opponent was making.
The 2024 presidential election arguably shaped up to be the clearest candidate contrast between freedom and Marxism after Vice President Kamala Harris gained the nomination. Now, with control of Congress on the line and California Rep. Adam Schiff (D) vying for late Sen. Diane Feinstein’s (D) seat, Trump called out Republican Senate candidate Steve Garvey for not embracing MAGA.
“And if he doesn’t have MAGA, he’s got no chance.”
The opinion was voiced Friday at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California where the president had held a press conference.
“I don’t know much about Steve Garvey. I think he’s made a big mistake because he hasn’t reached out to MAGA,” said the GOP leader in video shared by ABC 7 reporter Josh Haskell.
Trump on Steve Garvey “I’m hearing he wants the MAGA endorsement, but he’s gotta call me….You have one of the sleaziest politicians in history, crooked Adam schiff…One of the most disgusting human beings and to think he’s going to be a senator. That’s why you need me.” @ABC7 pic.twitter.com/t95NKyJdHI

“Well, I haven’t spoken to him. I’m hearing he wants the MAGA endorsement, but he’s got to call me,” Trump specified. “If he had the MAGA endorsement, he could win. If you had an honest election he’d win, but you don’t have an honest election.”
The president proceeded to take aim at Schiff, referring to the impeachment manager and Jan. 6 committee member as “one of the sleaziest politicians in history, Crooked Adam Schiff. He’s one of the most disgusting human beings and to think he’s gonna be a senator. That’s why you need me as president, because this guy is a sleazebag.”
Earlier this year, it had been reported that Garvey edged out Schiff in the open Senate primary at 27% to 25% with Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee are on the ballot earning 19% and 8% respectively. Even then it polling showed that in the general election, their matchup would see Schiff leading by double digits, a reality that has yet to change for the former Major League Baseball player, 10-time All-Star, 1981 World Series winner and 1974 National League MVP.
Despite that, a statement from Garvey to multiple media outlets Friday expressed, “Since day one, I’ve ran a different type of campaign, I have not taken or asked for a single political endorsement. The only endorsements I want are from the law enforcement community and first responders. This week, we launched a historic campaign dedicating all of our resources to talk with California’s Latino community from now until the election.”
“My focus is, and always has been, on the issues that truly matter to Californians–affordability, public safety, securing the border, fixing the homeless crisis, and restoring California’s leadership,” he went on of the once Golden State and former stomping grounds of Harris.
“I’m running a ‘Steve Garvey’ campaign for all the people of California, not for partisan special interests,” added the candidate. “I’m committed to tackling the challenges that families and communities face every day and making sure that California has the voice it deserves in Washington.”
With the recent Real Clear Politics average showing Schiff up 57.3% to 33% over Garvey, it remained unclear if the GOP senate hopeful, who noted he’d voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, would seek to alter his strategy moving forward.
