President Donald J. Trump dished on the fateful night during President Barack Obama’s presidency that he attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, insisting that he “really loved” the experience.
The reflection came during a phone-in appearance on Fox News’ “The Five,” after cohost Greg Gutfeld noted that Trump would be attending this year’s dinner.
“You know, I haven’t done it because right from the beginning I was treated rather rudely and crudely,” Trump said. “You know, I won the election in 2016. It was one of the greatest elections ever. And you were all witness to it, and I had great — but they were so nasty. The press was so nasty, I just– so I didn’t do it.”
“And you know, there is this theory that I was there while Barack Hussein Obama was speaking, and he was hitting me a little bit. Actually, it was very nice, and I was actually– I loved it. I really loved it,” the president said. “I was saying to my wife, our first lady, our movie star first lady – you know, I always say, there is only room in a family for one star, this could be a problem, but she is a movie star, can you believe it? But I was saying to her, I said, ‘You know, I love this, I am having a good time,’ because every joke was about me, and I sort of liked it. I can handle that stuff.”
“And they said I was so upset with that evening that I decided that evening to run for president,” he continued. “Well, it wasn’t, but it was at the White House dinner — had nothing to do with my running for president. I ask you enjoyed it. But I never did it, and I said I’ll do it now.”
Trump announced earlier this month in a post on Truth Social that he will attend this year’s White House Correspondence Dinner on April 25.
“The White House Correspondents Association has asked me, very nicely, to be the Honoree at this year’s Dinner, a long and storied tradition since it began in 1924, under then President Calvin Coolidge,” Trump wrote. “In honor of our Nation’s 250th Birthday, and the fact that these ‘Correspondents’ now admit that I am truly one of the Greatest Presidents in the History of our Country, the G.O.A.T., according to many, it will be my Honor to accept their invitation, and work to make it the GREATEST, HOTTEST, and MOST SPECTACULAR DINNER, OF ANY KIND, EVER!”
“Because the Press was extraordinarily bad to me, FAKE NEWS ALL, right from the beginning of my First Term, I boycotted the event, and never went as Honoree,” he added. “However, I look forward to being with everyone this year. Hopefully, it will be something very Special.”
