It’s not often that California Governor Gavin Newsom has been accused of having principles but he surprised many when he came to the defense of GOP frontrunner Donald J. Trump amid efforts to block him from the ballot in his state.
Following last week’s ruling by four left-wing justices on Colorado’s Supreme Court that banned the former president from the ballot in the upcoming primary, a move cheered by the hypocrites who pontificate endlessly about “our democracy,” Newsom’s lieutenant governor Eleni Kounalakis urged California Secretary of State Shirley Weber urging her to find a way to dump Trump from the ballot in time for next year’s election.
But Newsom isn’t down with that and in a rarity for a modern-era Democrat, he emphasized the importance of having the verdict on Trump rendered not by activist judges, but by the people themselves, a throwback to the pre-despotism period that encompassed the entirety of his party’s existence until Hillary Clinton gagged away the 2016 election.
“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” Newsom said in a Friday statement first reported by Politico, “But in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”
Following Newsom’s statement, some social media users posted resurfaced video footage of the governor’s remarks to reporters before a recent debate in which he acknowledged Trump’s dominance over the rest of the GOP field.

Finding Democrats who still support democracy is rare these days.

In her Wednesday letter to Weber, Lt. Gov. Kounalakis expressed her desire to strike while the iron was still hot after the unprecedented ruling by the Colorado court which deprived Trump of his constitutional right to due process with their move to use a highly controversial interpretation of the archaic Civil War-era provision in the 14th amendment to disqualify him on the basis that he participated in an actual insurrection.
“I urge you to explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot,” she wrote.

“I am prompted by the Colorado Supreme Court’s recent ruling that former President Donald Trump is ineligible to appear on the state’s ballot as a Presidential Candidate due to his role in inciting an insurrection in the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. This decision is about honoring the rule of law in our country and protecting the fundamental pillars of our democracy,” she claimed.
“California must stand on the right side of history. California is obligated to determine if Trump is ineligible for the California ballot for the same reasons described in Anderson,” Kounalakis insisted. “The Colorado decision can be the basis for a similar decision here in our state. The constitution is clear: you must be 40 years old and not be an insurrectionist,” she wrote, proving her ignorance about the nation’s founding document by incorrectly overshooting the age requirement by five years.
“There will be the inevitable political punditry about a decision to remove Trump from the ballot. but this is not a matter of political gamesmanship. This is a dire matter that puts at stake the sanctity of our constitution and our democracy,” the lieutenant governor wrote in her letter.
“Time is of the essence as your announcement of the certified list of candidates for the March 5, 2024, primary election is coming up next week, on December 28, 2023,” Kounalakis urged Weber in her letter, putting the secretary of state under pressure to move quickly.
