President Donald Trump teased his vice president during a breakfast for GOP senators on Wednesday morning.
The relationship between Trump and Vice President JD Vance comes across as a lot more relaxed than the one he had with his previous VP, Mike Pence. The candid nature of this friendship showed on Wednesday when the president ribbed Vance for “butting into conversations” during a conversation about Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Watch:
“I want to thank the press for treating us really well for this trip. Amazing meeting. Don’t forget, two months ago looked like the world was in trouble over rare earth, and that is no longer a subject people talk about. It was worked out quickly. Without tariffs, we couldn’t have done it. I put a 100% tariff on China. On President Xi, who is a friend as much as he can be a friend. He’s a tough man, smart man, actually, very smart,” Trump said. “The press does not like it when I call him ‘smart,’ they think I’m not supposed to call him ‘smart,’ but he leads 1.4 billion people without question. During the meeting we were there and some of you saw it, he is here, he has six people on each side and every one of those people were standing like this. They were at attention.”
“I made a comment to one of them and got no response. I said, ‘Are you going to answer me?’ No response, and President Xi did not let him. Any question, I said, ‘I want my cabinet to behave like that. I am demanding, sit up like that, nice and straight. Never seen men so scared in their lives.’ They have an equivalent of a vice president. I said, ‘Are you going to answer my question?’ I said, ‘What’s wrong with this guy?'” Trump added, before imitating Jinping: “‘I will answer all questions.’”
“Why don’t you behave like that? JD does not behave like that,” he joked, looking at Vance, who chuckled and sat at attention in his seat. “JD butts into conversations. I wanna have that for at least a couple of days. We’ll keep you long-term, but a couple of days of that would be nice.”
The room erupted into laughter at the interaction between the two.
This comes after Republicans had a shockingly rough election night, watching their Democrat opponents sweep up important seats in New York City, New Jersey and Virginia.
