Trump ‘open’ to possible meeting with Kim Jong Un during Asia trip

President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of meeting with North Korea’s leader during his trip to Asia.

While efforts at diplomacy between the United States and Kim Jong Un have long been considered pointless, Trump’s efforts toward peace around the world may not stop at the Middle East. While speaking to reporters late Friday, the American president expressed his interest in meeting. Both leaders have implied that their relationship is a positive one, which means that it is likely that Trump could get Kim Jong Un to come to the demilitarized zone (DMZ) for communication.

“Well, I would if he would contactThe last time I met him, I put it out over the internet that I’m coming to South Korea and if he’d like to meet, I’m open to it. I’d do it. If you want to put out the word, I’m open to it,” he said while on his way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aboard Air Force One. “They don’t have a lot of telephone service. They have a lot of nuclear weapons but not a lot of telephone service. I’m open to it.”

“He probably knows I’m coming, right? … Yeah, I’d be open to it, 100 percent. I got along very well with Kim Jong Un,” he added later.

Trump was on his way to Malaysia to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. He will also be visiting South Korea and Japan, and later next week, he will travel to China for a meeting with Xi Jinping.
