Trump pauses rally for heartwarming moment with parents of slain Bronx boy, 12

President Donald Trump had a truly human moment with the parents of slain 12-year-old Jacob Freytes.

Freytes was shot to death in the Bronx last month, allegedly by a career criminal, after riding his bike to the Wanda Deli Grocery with the goal of purchasing a ball. On Friday, Trump paused his speech at the Nassau County Police Academy to meet Freytes’ mother, Migdalia Martinez, and his father, Jesus Freytes, while promising to get even tougher on crime. The heartwarming moment quickly went viral for all the right reasons.

“Three weeks ago in [Governor] Kathy Hochul’s New York, a career criminal with 14 prior arrests threw an elderly woman onto the subway tracks, almost died, it was a miracle [she] barely lived,” the president said.

“Two weeks ago, a wonderful 12-year-old boy named Jacob Freytes was tragically shot and killed by a stray bullet fired by a repeat offender in a gun battle. He was having a gun battle with his friend, shooting bullets all over the place. Jacob was the son of a loving mom and a retired New York City police detective, who are incredible people, and I think they heard they may be with us today. Are you with us? May I introduce you?” the president asked as he looked off-stage.

He applauded the couple along with the rest of the attendees, but then he decided to engage in a more personal, meaningful way. He left the stage to meet the parents, shaking hands and speaking to them directly for several moments before returning and thanking them.

“We’re going after the bad, sick people,” Trump said, returning to the podium.
