Trump reacts to Jan. 6 panel’s subpoena for his testimony: What took them so long?

Former President Donald Trump went on a tear Thursday evening on his social media platform Truth Social, blasting the House select committee “investigating” the Jan. 6 protest at the U.S. Capitol after the panel voted to subpoena him for testimony about the events of that fateful day.

The unanimous 9-0 vote being a clear indication of just how one-sided Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s politically motivated Soviet-style show trial actually is.

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the committee’s chairman, said before the conclusion of a formal meeting the panel convened Thursday that it’s their “obligation” to seek Trump’s testimony.

“This is a question about accountability to the American people. He must be accountable,” he declared. “He is required to answer for his actions. He is required to answer to those police officers who put their lives and bodies on the line to defend our democracy. He is required to answer to the millions of Americans whose votes he wanted to throw out as part of his scheme to remain in power. And whatever is underway to ensure his accountability under the law, this committee will demand a full accounting to the American people of the events of January 6th.”

With the midterms just weeks away and the panel’s primetime dog and pony show failing to move the needle much when it comes to voters’ opinions, announcing that Trump will be subpoenaed was a guarantee to draw headlines and the former president called it just that, a publicity stunt.

“Why didn’t the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago? Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country which, by the way, is doing very badly – A laughing stock all over the World?” Trump wrote.

“The Unselect Committee is a giant Scam, presided over by a group of Radical Left losers, and two failed Republicans, the likes of which our Country has rarely seen before. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he added.

Trump also posted that the select committee “knowingly failed to examine the massive voter fraud which took place during the 2020 Presidential Election – The reason for what took place on January 6th.”

“I will be putting out my response to the Unselect Committee of political Hacks & Thugs tomorrow morning at 8:00,” the former president said in his final post for the evening.

Trump will very likely challenge the subpoena in the courts, with The Hill reporting it’s “not likely to result in testimony” from the former president because the challenge “is certain to extend beyond the life of the special committee, which is set to end later this year.”

Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich tweeted a damning statement denouncing the “partisan theatrics” from “bitter, power hungry & desperate” Democrats.
