Former President Donald J. Trump sees the recent flurry of filings from Jack Smith as moves made out of desperation and frustration that the underhanded special counsel may feel that he’s losing the political battle in the eyes of the public.
The moves by the chief legal hitman from Joe Biden’s weaponized Justice Department to take the incumbent’s top competitor off the playing field before the 2024 election have backfired bigly in Trump’s view by contributing to his nearly insurmountable lead in the GOP primaries.
“I think he [Smith] feels like he’s losing politically because I’m leading everybody by a lot,” Trump said during an interview last week with Breitbart News when he was asked about the federal prosecutor.
“I think I’d be leading anyway, but I wouldn’t be leading by this much. People are really angry about the weaponization, about a political opponent, about a really dumb person taking the Justice Department [DOJ] — it’s really easy to figure that out because so many other countries do it, but they’re all third-world countries, and they are banana republics — but people are angry about it,” he said, according to an excerpt of the lengthy interview published by the conservative outlet.
The former president also said that Smith was right out of “central casting.”
With the special counsel’s lightning-fast Jan. 6 lynching having been potentially thrown off-track as an appeals court sorts out the immunity issue, Smith moved again last week to impede Trump’s ability to defend himself in a D.C. courtroom in front of a jury drawn from an area that hates his guts, drawing a strong reaction from the target.

“Crooked Joe Biden’s errand boy, Deranged Jack Smith, is obsessed with attacking your favorite President, me, and with interfering in the 2024 Presidential Election, which I am Dominating. Deranged Jack is so Viciously and Desperately Angry that the Supreme Court just unanimously rejected his flailing attempt to rush this Witch Hunt, that he is ignoring the Law and clear instructions from the D.C. Court that this “case” should be stayed, and there cannot be any more filings,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Today’s pathetic motion is not just Illegal, it is also another Unconstitutional attempt to take away my First Amendment Rights, and to prevent me from saying the TRUTH — that all of these Hoaxes are nothing but a political persecution of me, the MAGA Movement, and the Republican Party by Crooked Joe and his Despicable Thugs. The Radical Left Communists, Marxists, and Fascists are petrified of me speaking the TRUTH because the American People don’t want them destroying our Country. Make America Great Again!” Trump added.
In a bold move, Trump’s legal team filed a motion Thursday calling for Smith to be held in contempt for continuing to issue motions during a stay.

“The Stay Order is clear, straightforward, and unambiguous,” Trump lawyer John Lauro wrote in the filing. “All substantive proceedings in this Court are halted. Despite this clarity, the prosecutors began violating the Stay almost immediately.”
Lauro also stated that Smith’s motion “mirrors the Biden administration’s dishonest talking points, asserting, again falsely, that President Trump was responsible for the events of January 6, 2021, when in truth he called for peaceful and patriotic assembly and protest.”
“In this manner, the prosecutors seek to weaponize the Stay to spread political propaganda, knowing that President Trump would not fully respond because the Court relieved him of the burdens of litigation during the Stay,” he wrote. “Worse, the prosecutors have announced their intention to continue this partisan-driven misconduct indefinitely, effectively converting this Court’s docket into an arm of the Biden campaign.”
“What this guy has done to this country in three years is unbelievable. You know, I have a saying I make in a lot of the speeches where I say if you add up the ten worst presidents in the history of our country — all of them, the ten worst, you could add them up cumulatively — they haven’t done the damage that Joe Biden has done to our country,” Trump told Breitbart in the interview that took place at Mar-a-Lago last Thursday.
