President Donald Trump addressed accusations that he is attacking freedom of the press on Monday.
In a Truth Social post, the president clarified his press ban does not mean that he is launching an “assault” on the press as a whole, just the “fake news” outlets that he says are “out of control.”

“The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America. It is corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control. It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, NOW! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he wrote.
This comes after his Friday announcement, which declared that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were banned from the White House grounds.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive.’ Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump posted.
On Saturday, MS NOW and CNN revealed that their reporters had been turned away from the White House in accordance with this post.
“Earlier this morning MS NOW journalists were denied access to the White House grounds. The White House belongs to the American people and the decisions made inside are funded by our tax dollars,” the outlet’s public relations page wrote. “MS NOW intends to take any and all steps necessary to defend our First Amendment rights and the essential role of independent journalism in our democracy.”
Shortly after, CNN senior White House reporter Betsy Klein shared her experience after trying to go to work that morning, revealing that her PIN had already been deactivated.
