Trump says he talked Putin down from invading Ukraine: ‘There’s going to be hell to pay’

Donald Trump sat down with Fox News host Brett Baier for a wide-ranging interview on Monday that drew plenty of eyes, and among the things discussed was the war in Ukraine, with the former president making the claim that he delayed the country being invaded for some time via a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“He wouldn’t have done it if it were me. He did it after I left,” the former president said. “I thought he might do it — look, I talked to him. I said, if you do it, there’s going to be hell to pay. It’s going to be a catastrophe. Don’t do it.”

“He said: ‘No, no, no, you won’t do that.’ I told him I was going to do something,” Trump continued. “He said: ‘No, no, no, you will not do that.’ I said: ‘I will, Vladimir. I will do it. I’m going to do it.’”

Without offering any details on what actions he would have taken, Trump added, “And he didn’t believe me at all, except for maybe 10%. And 10% is all you needed.”

Baier asked Trump about his claim that he could end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours.

“With Putin, I have a very good relationship. I mean, I haven’t spoken to him in a long while, but I had a very strong relationship,” Trump said.

After Trump acknowledged that Ukraine is a separate country from Russia, the Fox News host asked, “Is that part of the deal? Is – should Putin get Crimea?”

“Well, right – right now, I don’t talk about those deals, because it really would impede a negotiation,” the 2024 GOP presidential primary front-runner responded.

He did share that he would tell Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “something” and the war would end, reminding Baier that he became “very rich by doing deals.”

“I would have a deal done in 24 hours from the time we started, and I would tell Zelenskyy something, and I would tell Putin something, and I’d get him into a room, and I’d tell him again and again. I would have a deal done very quickly. And you know what? The death would stop and the destruction would stop,” Trump said.
