Trump teases US will be ‘taking over’ Cuba ‘on our way back from Iran’

Telegraphing potential action in the Western Hemisphere, President Donald Trump suggested a particular communist nation may be getting a special visit from a U.S. Navy warship.

All eyes may be on Iran, but as the commander-in-chief marked day 60 of Operation Epic Fury with a letter to Congress informing them that military action has been “terminated,” many wondered what comes next. According to the president’s own remarks in Florida on Friday, regime change in Cuba could be on the horizon as he teased an aircraft carrier may be stopping by on the way back from the Middle East  to facilitate the U.S. in “taking over almost immediately.”

Following an event at The Villages, Trump attended a dinner at The Forum Club of the Palm Beaches. During his speech, as he recognized architect Rick Gonzalez, a member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the chief executive spoke to the man’s heritage when he suggested upcoming action.

“And he comes from, originally, a place called Cuba, which we will be taking over almost immediately,” suggested Trump. “Cuba’s got problems. We’ll finish one first. I like to finish a job.”

Further painting the picture of what that could look like, the president told attendees, “On the way back from Iran, we’ll have one of our big — maybe the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, the biggest in the world — We’ll have that come in, stop about 100 yards offshore, and they’ll say, ‘Thank you very much, we give up.'”

In recent weeks, the commander-in-chief had hinted at doing something in Cuba as he responded to questions about reports by invoking former President Bill Clinton, as he told the press, “Well, it depends on what your definition of ‘military action’ is,” following a Turning Point USA speech where he said America’s “great strength” would bring about a “new dawn for Cuba.”

Meanwhile, after having confirmed the dispatch of a State Department delegation days later, Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat for an interview with Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst this week and discussed what it would take for improvement in Cuba.

“The other thing is, it can get better. But in order for it to get better, they do need very substantial and serious economic reforms,” said the Miami-born cabinet member of Cuban descent. “Those serious economic reforms are impossible with these people in charge. It can’t happen.”

“And these people in charge aren’t just economically incompetent,” he went on. “They have rolled out the welcome mat to adversaries of the United States to operate within Cuban territory, against our national interest, with impunity. We are not going to have a foreign military or intelligence or security apparatus operating with impunity 90 miles off the shores of the United States. That’s not gonna happen under President Trump.”

Already known for taking on numerous responsibilities in the administration, the secretary tallied another addition to his meme collection as it was suggested he would be taking charge in Cuba.
