Trump threatens Canada over bridge Obama ‘stupidly’ waived connecting Ontario to Detroit

Canada’s cozying up to China found President Donald Trump leveraging major infrastructure to the United States’ advantage while issuing a dire warning about a national pastime.

The neighbor to the north may have had a changing of the guard, electing Prime Minister Mark Carney after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation, but the pushback on Trump’s policies remains. Monday, the chief executive publicly proposed blocking a bridge connecting the two nations from opening until past negotiating slights are corrected, as he suggested the dire consequences of palling around with China over the United States would be the end of hockey.

Nearly a month after Carney praised Chinese President Xi Jinping and declared the “New World Order,” Trump took to Truth Social to assert he would not allow the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, to open

“The Tariffs Canada charges us for our Dairy products have, for many years, been unacceptable, putting our Farmers at great financial risk. I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” expressed the president.

At the onset of the post, the chief executive established America’s improving economy before calling out the bridge and his original predecessor’s role in handing an advantage to Canada.

“They own both the Canada and the United States side and, of course, built it with virtually no U.S. content. President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our  Steel,” wrote Trump. “Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just ‘take advantage of America!’ What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING!”

The president reminded that Ontario stopped selling American alcohol before calling out, “Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don’t think so.”

As for Canada’s national winter sport, Trump warned, “The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup.”

No explanation was offered as to why the commander-in-chief doubled down on his claim regarding hockey. That said, China has faced issues with international hockey in the past. The men’s national team almost didn’t participate in the 2022 Beijing Olympics as players were scouted from abroad — namely Canada — and given passports or provided exceptions toward dual citizenship.

Meanwhile, concerning the Stanley Cup-hosting the NHL, only seven of the league’s 32 teams are from Canada, and it remains possible that China hopes to see the tie dissolved.

Naturally, Democrats leapt at the opportunity to vent over the president seeking to put America first, including Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who suggested on X that such a move would hurt her state’s economy. “Canceling this project will have serious repercussions. Higher costs for Michigan businesses, less secure supply chains, and ultimately, fewer jobs.”

“With this threat, the President is punishing Michiganders for a trade war he started,” the senator went on, behaving as though Trump hadn’t inherited the detrimental policies of the past. He has often cited them in justifying negotiations and levying tariffs on countries. “The only reason Canada is on the verge of a trade deal with China is because President Trump has kicked them in the teeth for a year.”

Where it concerned the president’s objective, he concluded his post setting a minimum goal of acquiring half ownership of the bridge and its revenue, “We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical.”
