Trump walks back Disney defense, claims DeSantis ‘should have stopped’ company from going ‘woke’

Former President Donald J. Trump appeared to moderate his line of attack on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis after drawing criticism for what was perceived as siding with “woke” entertainment colossus Disney in its war against his top rival for the 2024 GOP nomination.

After being pummeled by Trump and his surrogates for months, the Sunshine State Republican hit back in a series of media appearances after he officially declared his White House candidacy last week, accusing the current frontrunner of going left and throwing in with a “multinational corporation that wants to sexualize kids.”

On Sunday, Trump took to Truth Social with a different take on “‘Rob’ DeSanctimonious,” his silly nickname for the rising conservative star, and the spat with Disney which unwisely chose to side with Democrats and other leftists against the governor over Florida’s parental rights bill to crack down on the groomers who preyed on young children in classroom settings. This time, the former president blamed DeSantis for allowing Disney to go “woke” in the first place.

“Disney has become a Woke and Disgusting shadow of its former self, with people actually hating it. Must go back to what it once was, or the ‘market’ will do irreparable damage,” Trump wrote in his post. “This all happened during the Governorship of ‘Rob’ DeSanctimonious. Instead of complaining now, for publicity reasons only, he should have stopped it long ago. Would have been easy to do – Still is!”

Earlier this month, Team Trump joined the left-wing media in hitting DeSantis after Disney announced that it had canceled its plans to relocate 2,000 jobs to Florida from California, a move that wasn’t exactly news since it was previously reported last year that it would likely happen.

DeSantis appeared on Newsmax after his campaign rollout where he expressed bewilderment that Trump would go left and would take the side of the groomer-enabling company against him.

“I think that some of the things he’s been attacking me on, I’ve been a little surprised at because he’s attacking me from the left and that’s really wasn’t that Donald Trump from 2015 and 2016,” the governor told host Eric Boling. “I mean he was a hard charger, leaning in on all the issues, very edgy on conservative issues, and it was part of the reason he did so well, but when he’s taken Disney’s side against me, I just kind of wonder like, OK, I get he wants to hit me, but don’t take the side of a multinational corporation that wants to sexualize kids.”

DeSantis also reacted to Trump’s distortions of his record on COVID despite his leadership during the unprecedented health crisis having been the gold standard among his fellow governors, many of whom exploited the opportunity to imbue themselves with dictatorial powers, including disgraced former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo whom the former president recently seemed to praise for his handling of the virus.

“I think he did great for three years, but when he turned the country over to Fauci in March of 2020, that destroyed millions of people’s lives,” DeSantis said during a telephone interview with conservative host Glenn Beck. “In Florida, we were one of the few that stood up, cut against the grain, took incoming fire from media, bureaucracy, the left, even a lot of Republicans, had schools open, preserved businesses.”
