McDonald’s has dropped tomatoes from its menu in most locations in India as wholesale prices have surged 288% in a month in some regions.
India is suffering from adverse weather conditions that are causing prices to skyrocket, according to Fox Business. Several items on McDonald’s menu in the country, like the popular Maharaja Mac Chicken burger, have included tomato slices.
But the fast food chain assures customers that cost is not the prevailing factor.
“Despite our best efforts, we are not able to get adequate quantities of tomatoes which pass our stringent quality checks,” notices posted in two McDonald’s restaurants in New Delhi said. “We are forced to serve you products without tomatoes.”
One social media user faulted the government for inflation “spiraling out of control.”
Even McDonald’s can’t afford tomatoes anymore.

A McDonald’s India – North and East spokesperson attributed the change to “seasonal” issues, The Hindu reported.
“Due to seasonal crop issues arising out of farm fields in a few regions, there are not enough quantities meeting our quality specifications available. To ensure our customers get the best quality we are known to serve, we are constrained to hold tomatoes for the time being,” the spokesperson said. “We reiterate that it is not due to the surge in the prices. It is only due to the non-availability of tomatoes meeting our quality specifications.”
He did note that some restaurants continue to serve tomatoes in the Punjab-Chandigarh area due to adequate quantities and that the move is only temporary.

“We are working towards resolving this issue by employing sustainable agriculture practices including hydroponically-grown tomatoes in a completely controlled environment to de-risk our requirements from vagaries of season,” the spokesperson said. “We should be able to bring back tomatoes to the menu soon.”
Meanwhile, in England, McDonald’s has revealed a new incentive effort via a MyMcDonald’s Rewards app that will provide free menu items such as Double Quarter Pounders, McCrispy and McMuffins when customers accumulate a sufficient number of points, according to the Daily Mail.
“Along with all their usual favourites, customers can now also redeem a regular Cold Soft Drink, an Apple Pie or a Filet-O-Fish when collecting Rewards points via the McDonald’s App,” the British paper reported. “Customers who are opted in to MyMcDonald’s Rewards and order and pay through the McDonald’s App will automatically earn points on their order – this includes McDelivery when ordered via the app.”
