Twitter reacts to Piers Morgan’s hacked account: ‘Elon, please let it go a few hours’

Piers Morgan’s Twitter account was evidently hacked overnight and his 8 million-plus followers were in for a ride by a foul-mouthed troll calling for the “territorial integrity” of Somalia.

Using foul language and racial slurs, the hacker tweeted a number of messages before the account was throttled.

Caution: Inappropriate language

The account was hacked by a group identifying themselves as the “Chuckling Squad,” a group of hackers who gained notoriety in 2019 for taking over a number of high-profile Twitter accounts belonging to various celebrities and public figures, according to the Daily Mail.

While social media users pondered how long the spectacle may last, the account was reportedly wiped clean within an hour.

The British newspaper said it has not been officially confirmed that hackers are part of The Chuckling Squad, reporting: “The group has claimed responsibility for a number of high-profile hacks in the past and have used ‘SIM swapping attacks’ as a method in which a hacker takes control of a victim’s phone number by tricking or coercing a phone company into transferring the number to a SIM card that the hacker controls.”

Other celebrities, including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, were also targeted, according to the Daily Mail, and the hackers “caused chaos on the platform for about an hour before Twitter was able to take control of the situation and removing all of the offensive tweets.”

In the end, social media users appeared to have been entertained by the intrusion… here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
