Democrats have a tendency to bill themselves as the saviors of our democracy, but how are they going to get around to saving anything when they can’t even overcome simple scheduling conflicts to appear with the ultimate representative of their party, the President of the United States, when he visits their states? Or is there something else at play here?
Two top Democrat candidates in Pennsylvania will miss President Joe Biden during his scheduled visit Friday in Pittsburgh, citing scheduling conflicts, with the snub coming a couple of weeks after Georgia gubernatorial candidate and social justice warrior Stacey Abrams dodged Biden when he traveled to Atlanta to speak on voting rights.
Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, will appear with the president Friday when he visits the research and development hub Mill 19, as will U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa. But John Fetterman, the state’s lieutenant governor, and Josh Shapiro, the attorney general, will miss the event, according to WTAE-TV. Fetterman, who’s running for the Senate, and Shapiro, a likely candidate for governor, were invited to participate in a photo line with the president.
Biden will discuss “strengthening the nation’s supply chains, revitalizing American manufacturing, creating good-paying union jobs, and building a better America,” according to the White House.
“The high-profile absences come as Democrats in other states have begun taking modest steps to distance themselves from the first-term president, whose approval ratings have fallen sharply in recent months,” the ABC affiliate reported. “And while Fetterman and Shapiro indicated that politics had no bearing on their schedules, their decisions to avoid Biden, particularly in his home state, could fuel further questions among anxious Democratic candidates elsewhere as they decide whether to embrace the struggling president.”
As the Associated Press noted, with the governor’s seat and a Senate seat up for grabs in Pennsylvania, the battleground state “is of great political importance” in the 2022 midterms. Democrats appear poised to lose control of both chambers of Congress.
When Abrams snubbed the president a couple of weeks ago, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said she skipped the landmark event because she “obviously doesn’t want to be on the same stage as Joe Biden.”
“I am not criticizing Stacey Abrams here,” Scarborough insisted. “I am making a comment about the political standing of Joe Biden as seen from a woman who’s running for governor of Georgia and wants to win that election. Politicians show up with presidents when they have 52% approval ratings. Politicians don’t show up with presidents when their approval ratings may be in the 30s in the state…”
“This is politics 101. I find it fascinating, and it speaks less to Stacey Abrams, that really does, than it does what she perceives Joe Biden’s political standing to be in the state of Georgia right now, that she’s not showing up in an event that was custom-made for her.” he added.
As for Biden’s approval rating, his popularity continues to tank as seen this week when he hit a new low of just 39 percent in the latest Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, with just 18 percent of the 1,815 registered voters surveyed saying they strongly approved of the president’s performance.
Even CNN is having trouble carrying Biden’s water, as seen from Chris Cillizza, the network’s politics reporter, who was responding this week to an equally dismal Pew Research Center survey that showed 56% of those surveyed disapproved of the job Biden is doing.
“The overall picture these numbers paint?” he wrote. “A public that has lost confidence in Biden’s ability to get us to the other end of this pandemic and that has turned negative about the broader prospects for his presidency. People are worried about the economy — and Covid’s impact on it — while feeling the pinch of inflation on their daily necessities.”
“It’s a remarkably grim outlook. And one that suggests that Biden’s party is headed for a major comeuppance in November — unless things change both drastically and soon,” Cillizza concluded.
