Americans are being advised to steer clear of Tamaulipas, Mexico, a border town that has seen an explosion of violence recently.
The US consulate is issuing its strongest travel warning as gun battles, kidnappings and even IEDs are being reported in Tamaulipas, which sits across the border from McAllen, Texas. The “Level 4: Do not travel” advisory details the precautions that America’s government employees should take in the area.
“As a precaution, U.S. government employees have been ordered to avoid all travel in and around Reynosa and Rio Bravo outside of daylight hours and to avoid dirt roads throughout Tamaulipas,” the consulate wrote in their warning.
“Authorities are urging Americans to avoid dirt roads, not to touch unknown objects near or on roads and to plan travel during daylight hours. Additionally, Americans are advised to notify family and friends of their whereabouts “for your safety.'” Fox News reports.
The Level 4 designation denotes an increased “likelihood of life-threatening risks” and notes a decreased ability for the US government “to provide assistance, including during an emergency.”
McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos explained that Americans are “exhausted” by politicians “just kicking the ball” over immigration, in a statement to Fox News Digital.
Trump’s strong stance on immigration has been the main focus of the first two weeks of his second administration, with mass deportations and arrests taking place almost immediately after he returned to the Oval Office. The statement he has made on the national and global stage has been opposed by the likes of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who despite his grandstanding on social media capitulated to Trump almost immediately after tariff threats were made.
Despite initially rejecting planefuls of Colombian migrants being returned to their homeland, Petro eventually reversed course and welcomed his “compatriots” with open arms. Meanwhile, his daughter insisted on an eye-for-an-eye approach, suggesting the country deport one “gringo” for every Colombian returned.
It’s clear that the party is just getting started under Trump, and it remains to be seen if countries will continue to react with defiance, or if they will make efforts to work with the United States.
