U.S. officials reportedly considered relocating Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth after drones were detected over an Army base in Washington.
Amid concerns about retaliation from Iran in the ongoing Epic Fury campaign, the U.S. remains on high alert and, according to a report from the Washington Post, “multiple drones were spotted over Fort Lesley J. McNair on a single night in the last 10 days.”
The outlet cited a “senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity” in its report, which noted that the drones prompted “increased security measures and a meeting at the White House to discuss how to respond.”
The Washington Post cited “three people briefed on the situation” who reported on the unidentified drones above the Washington Army base where the Trump Cabinet officials live.
“The drones over Fort McNair prompted officials to weigh relocating Rubio and Hegseth, two of the people briefed said. The senior administration official said the secretaries haven’t moved. Their quarters on the base were publicly reported by multiple outlets in October,” the paper reported.
The US State Department reportedly did not respond to requests for comment, and Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell did not address the drones.
“The department cannot comment on the secretary’s movements for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is grossly irresponsible,” he told WaPo.
The heightened alert level has led to lockdowns at several domestic military bases and, earlier this week, diplomatic posts worldwide were ordered by the State Department to “immediately” undertake security assessments, WaPo reported, noting that the notice cited “the ongoing and developing situation in the Middle East and the potential for spillover effects.”
“This week, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey and MacDill Air Force Base in Florida raised their force protection level to Charlie — a designation that means the commander has intelligence indicating an attack or danger is possible,” the newspaper noted, adding that twice this week, US Central Command (CENTCOM) headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base was placed on lockdown.
“The FBI is now investigating a suspicious package that closed the base’s visitors center for hours Monday, and on Wednesday an unspecified security incident left the base under a shelter-in-place order for hours, the base said in a statement,” WaPo reported.
An Air Force spokesperson said in a statement, “To ensure the safety and security of our people and the mission, commanders adjust their installation’s security posture in accordance with local threat assessments.”
