As the United States experiences a shakeup in the 2024 presidential race, it would appear Americans are not the only ones watching closely.
While the rest of the country was gearing up to hear how President Joe Biden would explain his decision to drop out of the race, the North American Aerospace Defense Command Public Affairs (NORAD) reported that it dispatched fighter jets to intercept foreign aircraft. This consisted of two Russian Tu-95 “Bear” bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers, which were confronted off the Alaskan coast.
NORAD says that fighter jets from Canada were also involved in the interception.

“The Russian and PRC aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace. This Russian and PRC activity in the Alaska ADIZ is not seen as a threat, and NORAD will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence,” read a statement from NORAD. “An ADIZ begins where sovereign airspace ends and is a defined stretch of international airspace that requires the ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security.”
