Virginia Dems’ control of state senate may hinge on whether member fibbed about residence

Although Virginia Democrats won the state House in last week’s elections, they may be on track to lose the state Senate, which they currently hold by just one seat.

The reason why is because of allegations that state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, a Democrat, is ineligible to hold office because she’d lied about where she lives, according to an exclusive investigation by The Daily Wire.

“Virginia Senate candidates are required to live in the district they are running for, and Hashmi filed candidacy paperwork saying she lived in an apartment on Boulder Lake Drive in North Chesterfield in Senate District 15,” the outlet notes.

The problem is that four of her neighbors have since filed a complaint alleging that she lives outside the district reportedly on Bosham Lane in Midlothian.

To prove their claim, they produced a spreadsheet documenting how they’d driven past her Bosham Lane home at least 62 times in October and observed her car being there at night but disappearing after 8:00 am in the morning.

Even if Hashmi does perhaps genuinely live in North Chesterfield, her ownership of the home in Midlothian would still be an issue — a criminal one, in fact.

“The Certificate of Candidacy Qualification, which she signed March 14, 2023, says, ‘I now reside at the address shown below in the district in which I seek office,’ under which she listed the North Chesterfield apartment,” according to The Daily Wire.

“The form also asks, ‘Do you or a member of your immediately family, separately or together, hold an interest valued at more than $5,000 in real property? DO NOT INCLUDE your principal residence.’ She checked ‘no,’ and did not list the Midlothian home. Real estate records show that she and her husband have owned that — worth nearly $600,000 — since 1999,” the outlet’s reporting continues.

Here’s the key: The form makes it very clear that “knowingly making any untrue statement or entry in this document is a felony under Virginia law” punishable with “a maximum fine of $2,500 and/or confinement for up to ten years.”

The publication of all these findings comes days after Hashmi won an election against Hayden Fisher, a Republican. Speaking with The Daily Wire, Fisher said he plans to raise a ruckus over Hasmi’s clearly fraudulent living situation.

“I plan to stop them from certifying the election. She’s disqualified. That means I ran unopposed as a matter of law. There’s no question whatsoever that she does not live in that apartment. She definitely, clearly, intentionally lied on that form. And she does not reside in the district so she should not represent it,” he said.

“She made no genuine effort to actually move into the district, she just rented an apartment. Why don’t you just sell your house and move into the district? She just doesn’t even care. The arrogance is mind boggling,” he added.

“Even if you look only at the document itself, she’s claiming she lives in this apartment and she didn’t list that she owns a secondary residence, when it’s a matter of public record that she owns it. Number one, it’s a crime, number two, the board of elections should remove her. If she cares about democracy the way she and the Democrats claim they care about democracy, then she should voluntarily concede this election to me,” he continued.

He also said that Hashmi’s votes should be declared invalid, and he should automatically be certified as the winner of the election.

“Holding a new election would not be appropriate because it would not punish the conduct, he said, and because of Democrats’ new law requiring 45 days of early voting, it would be enormously expensive to taxpayers and candidates, and leave residents of the district without a senator for months,” according to The Daily Wire.

“Should the commonwealth have to pay for a special election because the Democrats’ candidate was dishonest?” he said in his own words.

Responding to these findings, conservative X users expressed zero surprise at Hashmi’s alleged Democrat dishonesty:
