A Washington state Democrat is facing outrage over remarks she made about the border crisis last March.
Appearing at the time on the “Pod Save America” podcast, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez argued that most Americans aren’t concerned about the throngs of illegals pouring in across the southern U.S. border, as reported this week by Fox News.
“Listen, nobody stays awake at night worrying about the southern border,” she said. “That’s just not … people stay awake at night worrying that their kid is gonna relapse or that, you know, someone’s going to drop out of school or they’re going to lose their house.”
“Those are the things that … not socialism, and I think that’s been the most frustrating thing about being actually in DC is that we’re like voting on the horrors of socialism and it’s like that’s not what matters to people,” she added.
A year later, the border crisis is now even worse than before, with major cities being forced to house illegal alien migrants in public schools and more illegals streaming across the border every second.
December 2023 set a record high of 302,000 illegal border crossings. 8.8 million illegal border crossings since @POTUS took office is unacceptable. The Biden Administration has left our southern border unprotected and we must pass actionable policy for change to occur. pic.twitter.com/JV9TdZ5uOm

The National Republican Congressional Committee was not pleased by Perez’s rhetoric, especially since her pro-Trump district is currently suffering from a fentanyl crisis.
“Marie Gluesenkamp Perez’s comments are not only tone-deaf, they reveal her dangerous true beliefs about the border,” NRCC spokesperson Ben Peterson told Fox News.
“Gluesenkamp Perez callously dismissing the Biden border crisis as if it’s not fueling the fentanyl epidemic slamming her district, then voting against border security shows how unfit she is,” he added.
The NRCC also bashed her for voting against a GOP border security bill, H.R. 2., that would have stymied the release of illegal aliens into the interior of the U.S. and also enhanced border security.
The congresswoman also faces backlash on social media:
@RepMGP You’re full of crap. The border is going to be the crisis not the climate BS.

So, people don’t think about the border? I want you to be the most likely Democrat to be defeated in 2024.

@RepMGP Your remarks about our “invasion” from the Southern border show just how stupid and out of touch the Democratic Party with the the American people. You can bet your bottom dollar it keep millions of voters awake at night! Try living in Texas!

.@RepMGP couldn’t be more out of touch with the 75% of Americans who *DO* view the border as a “crisis” or “very serious.” https://t.co/6qa8ora9Ui #WA03 pic.twitter.com/R1U7EO1GDU

Perez isn’t the only Democrat in the spotlight this week for making outrageous comments about the border crisis. So is New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Earlier this very week, she asserted that the solution to the migrant crisis is to just hand over legal status to the millions of illegals streaming across the southern U.S. border.
“From all parts of the political spectrum, one of the biggest issues that we have when it comes to immigration is that we have an undocumented population,” she said.
“Now you can fix that by trying to build a wall, or you can fix that by trying to document people,” she added.
Meaning give the “undocumented” migrants official legal paperwork.

Also this week, she scoffed when asked about New York City officials kicking public high school students out of school to make room to house illegal alien migrants.
Asked about this on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez shrugged it off as irrelevant because it isn’t yet affecting her district.
“Are you okay with a school being used as a shelter?” Fox Business reporter Hillary Vaughn asked her.
“It’s not in my district,” the congresswoman replied.
Fox Business Network host Lisa Kennedy Montgomery for her part responded to the congresswoman’s remarks by blaming the crisis on the exact sorts of policies that congressional Democrats like Ocasio-Cortez regularly push.
“It’s her policies, and that’s the problem,” she said. “People like AOC aren’t taking ownership of their philosophy, which is bankrupting cities across the country. And people in New York, people in Chicago never really had to think about the immigration crisis, because to them it was theoretical. Well, now it’s actual.”
