When does this stop? Climate crazies deface Claude Monet painting in Stockholm

A common question when it comes to the climate crazies attacking famous artwork is when does this stop?

Of course, there appear to be few consequences for their actions, which are often dismissed as little more than civil disobedience — a rare exception took place in May, when two climate protesters were indicted on conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States and injury to a National Gallery of Art exhibit when they allegedly used black and red paint to deface the Edgar Degas sculpture “Little Danger Aged Fourteen.”

On Thursday, two women in Stockholm threw “some kind of paint” at a painting by French artist Claude Monet and then glued themselves to the frame, the Associated Press reported, citing Sweden’s National Museum

“The situation is urgent. As a nurse, I refuse to watch. The pandemic was nothing compared to the climate collapse. It’s about life or death,” said one of the protesters, identified in a news release as Emma Johanna Fritzdotter. “People won’t just die from heat stroke. New diseases will spread, and we cannot even imagine the extent of this.”

The women are reportedly with the environmentalist group Restore Wetlands.

The painting, The Artist’s Garden at Giverny, “is now being examined by the museum’s conservators to see if any damage has occurred,” spokesperson Hanna Tottmar said.

The museum’s acting director Per Hedström said, ”We naturally distance ourselves from actions where art or cultural heritage risks being damaged … regardless of the purpose.”

Other attacks on artwork in Europe include the British group Just Stop Oil throwing tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers in London’s National Gallery in October, the AP noted, and activists from the group glued themselves to the frame of an early copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper at London’s Royal Academy of Arts.

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
