Why Trump pardoned sheriff convicted of bribery under Biden’s ‘corrupt and weaponized’ DOJ

Leniency for a sheriff convicted of bribery came with a scathing rebuke of the “Corrupt and Weaponized Biden DOJ” as President Donald Trump unloaded on “Radical Left ‘monsters.'”

After a career in law enforcement that included more than 10 years served as Culpeper County sheriff in Virginia, former Sheriff Scott Jenkins had been facing a different sort of decade of service. On Memorial Day, the president put a stop to Jenkins’ prison sentence as he announced a pardon that called out the behavior of the district judge appointed by then-President Joe Biden.

“Sheriff Scott Jenkins, his wife Patricia, and their family have been dragged through HELL by a Corrupt and Weaponized Biden DOJ,” wrote Trump on Truth Social. “In fact, during his trial, when Sheriff Jenkins tried to offer exculpatory evidence to support himself, the Biden Judge, Robert Ballou, refused to allow it, shut him down, and then went on a tirade.”

“As we have seen, in Federal, City, and State Courts, Radical Left or Liberal Judges allow into evidence what they feel like, not what is mandated under the Constitution and Rules of Evidence,” continued the president. “This Sheriff is a victim of an overzealous Biden Department of Justice, and doesn’t deserve to spend a single day in jail. He is a wonderful person, who was persecuted by the Radical Left ‘monsters,’ and ‘left for dead.'”

“This is why I, as President of the United States, see fit to end his unfair sentence, and grant Sheriff Jenkins a FULL and Unconditional Pardon. He will NOT be going to jail tomorrow, but instead will have a wonderful and productive life,” concluded Trump.

After serving Culpeper County from 2012 to 2023, Jenkins lost his re-election before he was later tried and convicted in December 2024, having been accused of accepting over $75,000 in bribes for appointing Virginia businessmen as auxiliary deputy sheriffs.

“Scott Jenkins violated his oath of office and the faith the citizens of Culpeper County placed in him when he engaged in a cash-for-badges scheme,” acting U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Lee said in March when the sheriff was sentenced to 10 years in prison for convictions that included one count of conspiracy, four counts of honest services fraud and seven counts of bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds.

“We hold our elected law enforcement officials to a higher standard of conduct, and this case proves that when those officials use their authority for unjust personal enrichment, the Department of Justice will hold them accountable,” added Lee. “I am grateful to the FBI for their tireless work on this investigation.”

Among Jenkins’ co-defendants, the Justice Department included two undercover agents with the FBI.

During a webinar hosted by the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association in April, the sheriff said, “I truly believe if I could get an hour of time with someone in the administration and lay out some facts with my attorney and I really believe if they could hear the other side which I couldn’t get in front of the jury — I believe wholeheartedly in the president.”

“I believe if he heard the information, I know he would help if he knew my story,” added Jenkins.

The organization submitted an open letter to the president last week suggesting the sheriff had been targeted because he “had begun exploring criminal investigations into Hunter Biden.”

The letter also insisted the bribery charges are “baseless and [stem] from unjust actions by the DOJ and the FBI. A member of Sheriff Jenkins’ Search and Rescue Squad, facing severe tax evasion charges, was coerced by federal agents into framing Sheriff Jenkins in exchange for leniency. This coercion represents the true bribery at play.”

Worth noting, Jenkins had added his voice to a pro-Second Amendment rally in January 2020 opposing gun control legislation in Virginia by saying, “My intent was to swear in thousands of auxiliary deputy sheriffs and make it legal for them to possess the weapons that they’re trying to ban and restrict.”
