A wild video captured a member of San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s police security detail wrestling with a crazed lunatic just feet away from the Democratic politician.
That officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, as did another officer, as a result of the encounter that began when several people blocked the black SUV used to ferry Lurie around. While Lurie’s press secretary, Charles Lutvak, was quick to say the mayor “was not involved,” Mission Local reported that Lurie “hopped out” of the SUV to ask the people to move, and while initially cooperative, one of the men began “talking gibberish.”
That’s when the officer seen in the video intervened, which concluded with that officer falling back with the man on top of him, hitting his head on the pavement. Mayor Lurie can be seen watching the altercation with his hands in his pockets before walking away.
Video obtained by Mission Local shows a police officer, part of Mayor Lurie’s security detail, tussling with a man in the Tenderloin.
The mayor looks on before walking away.

“Lurie’s driver, also a police officer, was preoccupied with another man, though he did not appear injured. It is not clear if the second man attacked anyone. It is also unclear what happened with the third person the police officer on the mayoral security detail mentioned initially,” Mission Local reported.
Two men were arrested, with the second suspect being apprehended after he tried to flee.
“There was an altercation this evening involving the mayor’s security detail. The mayor was not involved,” Lutvak said. “We appreciate our SFPD officers for their quick response and for keeping our city safe every day.”
If the mayor of the city isn’t safe, despite his police protection, imagine what the city’s residents endure, though some questioned the competency of Lurie’s security detail.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
@realDonaldTrump when is enough enough? Please send the National Guard! If the mayor is not safe, none of us are. Drugs are still destroying our city, and murder is up 600% this year so far. The @DanielLurie vibe-parade is not cutting it.

@DanielLurie @SFPD This is what the average San Franciscan deals with daily.
On @SFMTA_Muni muni, on @SFBART , on the streets.
👉And without security.
👉And, our homes, randomly invaded. And if we defend ourselves in our home, for shooting the invader dead, we are…

Security getting handled by random homeless vagrants in multiple videos? Is the security holding back for some reason or just incapable?

This feels like another example of statistics not always equaling the reality of how people feel on the ground level in a city like San Francisco. When even a mayor can’t avoid confrontations navigating the streets is it really that safe?

1. Not fighting for underhooks
2. Leaves his leg between the other guy’s legs when he should’ve pulled it out
3. Doesn’t shrimp his hips away when he’s mounted
4. Gives his back to the guyDo they even test these security guards? Or is being large the only requirement?
