Nicknamed the Sunshine State and known as the Freedom State in part thanks to the efforts of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), Florida’s no-nonsense reputation against criminality has also made it every bit the Law & Order State. An example of how “violent threats will not be tolerated” played out early in the week when the state’s own executive was met with alleged death threats.
According to a release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Danyele Callaway of Riverview, southeast of Tampa, had prompted a response from law enforcement Monday when she was said to have sought a meeting with DeSantis that included “life-threatening statements.”
“The message, authored by an individual identifying herself as Danyele Callaway, 20, included a request for an immediate in-person meeting and included life-threatening statements, prompting concerns among staff, who subsequently notified law enforcement,” detailed HCSO in the release.
WKMG reported that Callaway’s message submitted on the governor’s website had read in part, “You gonna try and bakeract me again comeon over and try you scurry (expletive) hoe I kill ya you already know this you can’t do (expletive) try me hoe try and bakeract me send me to jail gimme more to write about ry and take me away I still kill ya at the end hoe try me youcat do (expletive) CONFESS CONFESS CONFESS [sic].”
After staff notified the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was read in, prompting a Tuesday morning interview of Callaway from the department’s Behavioral Resource Unit.
“The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate any threats, especially from individuals who think they can hide behind their keyboards to spread fear and harm,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We will not accept a threat against anyone in our community, especially our Governor. Threatening the lives of those who serve our democratic institutions is an attack on the very principles of our society and justice system.”
“While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, no one has the right to endanger others’ lives. This case is a stark reminder that violent threats will not be tolerated. We will continue to pursue and hold accountable anyone who seeks to disrupt the peace and safety of our community,” added Chronister.

After she was said to have admitted to HCSO deputies that she had made the threats against the governor, Callaway was arrested, booked at Orient Road Jail, and charged with Written or Electronic Threat to Kill or Inflict Bodily Injury.
According to a report from WTSP, Callaway’s record included previous charges of battery on public servants and the sheriff’s office further indicated, “Callaway has previously made verbal threats against Governor Ron DeSantis and expressed strong anti-government and anti-law enforcement views.”
Meanwhile, the governor’s approach to law and order has included efforts to protect law enforcement officers from wrongful prosecution and the curbing of soft-on-crime policies that have hampered efforts to protect communities.
