Zoo takes flak for euthanizing sickly giraffe and feeding it to lions, digs deeper by posting picture

A Czech Republic zoo is catching plenty of flak for feeding one of its giraffes to a lion after the animal died.

The Ostrava Zoo had an elderly giraffe put down and “instead of letting the 300kg animal go to waste, they carved its body up and fed it to the zoo’s predators — including its lions,” The Mirror reported.

The zoo defended the action amid all the fury, essentially referring to the circle of life in saying “it would happen in nature,” according to the British newspaper.

Not helping its case at all, the zoo shared a picture on social media of a lion devouring a portion of the giraffe’s corpse.

The giraffe was reportedly 19-years-old and Zoo spokeswoman Šárka Nováková said on social media that the animal “first fell down, was breathing heavily and did not get up again.”

“Everything pointed to heart failure. Due to the general condition, hypoxia, age and stress of the animal, we proceeded to euthanize it,” she added. “Meat from more than 300kg animal was used as food for domestic animals and other carnivores, as it would happen in nature.”

The zoo pointed out that in nature, giraffes live to around the age of 20 years.

“In human care, the age of life is usually higher, animals often exceed 20 years. The giraffe was healthy, until after the collapse it was found that it had a weaker heart. She was shot and then fed. We currently have two young giraffes – one male and one female, breeding will certainly continue and expand,” the facility added, according to The Mirror.

“Very sad … even if it’s the law of nature, the photo is out of place…” one social media user responded.

As for those who prefer a softer, gentler world, there’s enough cuteness here to mainline it
