Tensions in Memphis, Tennessee, are mounting ahead of Friday’s 7 p.m. EST release of police bodycam footage of the brutal treatment of Tyre Nichols at the hands of five police officers.
Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis joined CNN “This Morning” host Don Lemon Friday morning and stated the fatal injuries Nichols received were “incomprehensible” to her. The 29-year-old died three days after the traffic stop.
“I was outraged. It was incomprehensible to me. It was unconscionable… I don't think I've witnessed anything of that nature my entire career.”

After seeing the video, Davis said, “I was outraged.”
“It was incomprehensible to me,” she repeated. “It was unconscionable and I felt that I needed to do something. and do something quickly. I don’t think I’ve witnessed anything of that nature my entire career.”
When pressed about what America can expect to see in the footage, Davis replied, “You’re going to see acts that defy humanity. You’re going to see a disregard for life, duty of care that we all swear an oath to, and a level of physical interaction that is above and beyond what is required in law enforcement.”
“I’m sure that… individuals watching will feel what the family felt,” she continued. “And if you don’t, you’re not a human being.”
As BizPac Review previously reported, Nichols, 29, was stopped by Memphis police on Jan. 7 on suspicion of reckless driving.

Police said a “confrontation” occurred and Nichols fled the scene on foot. Officers caught up to him, and “another confrontation occurred.”
What ensued was a beating that attorneys for the Nichols family likened to the infamous 1991 police beating of Rodney King, which sparked the Los Angeles riots.
The five officers involved — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith — were, like Nichols, Black.
All were promptly fired, arrested, and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct, and official oppression, according to the Daily Mail.

While Haley is still in jail with a $350,000 bond, the other four officers have been released on a combined $1 million bond.
Meanwhile, Nichols’ grieving mother, RowVaughn Wells, is urging people to remain peaceful when the footage is released.
“Our family is grief-stricken right now, and this is very hard to swallow,” she said during a candlelight vigil Thursday night.
“When that tape comes out tomorrow, it’s going to be horrific. I didn’t see it, but from what I hear, it’s going to be horrific,” she continued. “But I want each and every one of you to protest in peace.”
“I don’t want us burning up our cities, tearing up the streets because that’s not what my son stood for,” she stated. “And if you guys are here for me and Tyre, you will protest peacefully.”

Meanwhile, in Georgia, Governor George Kemp has activated 1,000 National Guard troops in anticipation of more anti-police violence.
Last Saturday, Atlanta erupted in an Antifa-driven “Night of Rage,” in protest of the police-involved death of Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, aka, “Tortuguita.”

“Georgians respect peaceful protests, but do not tolerate acts of violence against persons or property,” Kemp’s order reads.
Barring the need for renewal, the state of emergency will expire on Thursday, Feb. 9.
On Twitter, nerves are clearly frazzled as users await the release of the police bodycam footage.
“Bracing myself for what feels like endless trauma for Black folks in this country,” tweeted activist Kina Collins. “He should be here.”

Others wish to remember Nichols as he was, “LIVING his best life.”

And President Joe Biden has weighed in.
“Jill and I extend our hearts to the family of Tyre Nichols – they deserve a swift, full, and transparent investigation,” he tweeted on Thursday. “Tyre’s death is a painful reminder that we must do more to ensure that our justice system lives up to the promise of fairness and dignity for all.”
