Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) dusted off her economics degree Friday to try making a point about evil corporations only to be bombarded by the reality she had dunked on herself, queueing up the ridicule from social media: “Not exactly time for a victory lap.”
In 2019, the then-freshman congresswoman had famously set herself apart by bragging that her efforts had helped keep her district from reaping the benefits of as many as 25,000 jobs through the construction of an Amazon headquarters in Queens, NY.
Quicker than the e-commerce giant can fulfill a Prime delivery order, Ocasio-Cortez was touting the virtues of managed decline as she seemingly celebrated news that Amazon was putting a stop on a similar construction project in Virginia at the same time that they were having to cut their existing workforce.
“When I opposed the Amazon project coming to New York [because] it was a scam of public funds, the whole power establishment came after us,” the New York lawmaker wrote. “Billboards went up in Times Sq denouncing me. Powerful pols promised revenge. Op-Eds & CEOs insulted my intelligence. In the end, we were right.”
“I know I’ll never get an apology for that time, but it was worth it,” she went on. “We protected NYers from a scam deal to drain public dollars from schools & infrastructure in exchange for empty promises of ‘Amazon jobs’ [with] 0 guarantees or guardrails. Sadly, cities who took it are suffering.”

“Wait,” investor Taylor Morgan responded making sure he wasn’t missing the point that Ocasio-Cortez was making. “You prevented jobs from coming to NY. Then when the government causes a recession because of uncontrolled printing and spending and companies do layoffs, you take an ‘I told you so’ victory lap?”
“This type of grift is exactly what’s wrong with Washington,” he added earning himself a bullseye from another user.

Meanwhile, author Jacob Airey concluded in multiple tweets that AOC’s actions “to get headlines” that had real, lasting ramifications hadn’t garnered her anything but further proof that she should show herself the door.
“You don’t deserve an apology,” he wrote, “you should resign in disgrace,” and others remarked with similar takes on the lawmaker’s boast while pointing out how cities that had welcomed in the business were benefiting.
You opposed it to get headlines and cost your district countless jobs. You should resign in disgrace.

Virginians have thousands of Amazon jobs that NYers don’t thanks to you

It is cute you believe this. Jobs are important.

There’s a difference between something being a scam and a project pushed out due to economic uncertainty.

Lucky they have you, to save them from all those jobs! Slay Queen!

Ocasio-Cortez also went on to make her alma mater of Boston University proud as she tried to defend her position after entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary had called her out by name for being “great at killing jobs. She kills jobs by the thousands.”
The remark came during a discussion on CNN’s “This Morning” where the businessman had noted how New York had become “uninvestable” because of regulations.
On Twitter, the representative demonstrated her unrivaled grasp of finance by arguing, “If it’s so ‘uninvestable,’ then why is NYC home to some of the most billionaires in the world? This is what billionaires do. They leverage their power to gain platforms and spread unsubstantiated claims to push policies that are even more favorable to them than they already are.”

They live in NYC. They do not create jobs there.

They live there, they don’t invest there. How are you this slow and still get people to retweet you? You killed jobs in your district.
