AOC scolds Sen. Menendez for playing the race card

Claims of racism is a tool for me, but not for thee. That’s the message U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., had for Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., as the self-avowed socialist lawmaker went on record Sunday calling for Menendez to resign in the face of an “extremely serious” indictment.

“The situation is quite unfortunate, but I do believe that it is in the best interest for Sen. Menendez to resign in this moment,” AOC said in an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. “As you mentioned, consistency matters. It shouldn’t matter whether it’s a Republican or a Democrat. The details in this indictment are extremely serious.”

CBS Host Margaret Brennan referenced Menendez claiming he was targeted because he was a “Latino American,” but Ocasio-Cortez was oddly not buying into the allegation of racism this time.

“As a Latina, there are absolutely ways in which there is systemic bias. But I think what is here in this indictment is quite clear. And I believe [resignation] is in the best interest to maintain the integrity of the seat,” she told Brennan.

Menendez faces federal bribery charges alleging he and his wife “engaged in a corrupt relationship” with three New Jersey businessmen from at least 2018 through 2022, allegedly receiving money, gold bars, and a luxury car in exchange for official favors.

The indictment claims the couple accepted “hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes in exchange for using Menendez’s power and influence as a senator to seek to protect and enrich Hana, Uribe and Daibes and to benefit the Arab Republic of Egypt.”

The senator has already stepped down “temporarily” from his position as head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and calls for his resignation continue to grow.

Social media users were not too impressed with AOC’s sudden lean toward integrity, suggesting ulterior motives may be at play for the former Bronx bartender.
