‘Over our dead bodies!’ Angry New Yorkers protest plan to turn college dorm into migrant shelter

New York City’s latest move to put the needs of illegal aliens ahead of citizens was met with clashing protests Sunday amid shouts of “Over our dead bodies!”

Hotels, parks, former schools and police gymnasiums have all been utilized across The Big Apple to accommodate the tens of thousands of aliens making their way to the city courtesy of President Joe Biden’s unmitigated border crisis. With consideration of converting a former college dormitory in the Bronx to another shelter underway, groups gathered in the rain to have their concerns heard.

“Affordable Housing, yes! Migrants, no!” read one sign as another protester held up a placard that declared “No land grabs! Save our children.”

Among some 75 who stood against the housing, as reported by the New York Post, members of the Guardian Angels assembled, including founder and former mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa.

“Over our dead bodies!” raged the public figure at the protest where he spoke at length into a megaphone.

According to CBS News, the seven-story building on West 238th Street that had been student housing for nearly 50 years had been purchased by the Stagg Group, a real estate developer, for $18 million earlier this year. At a recent community meeting, a representative for the developer informed those gathered about discussions with the Department of Homeless Services to use the property to house illegal migrants instead.

The deal was reported as $2.4 million in annual rent by the Post.

“I’m concerned about the neighborhood and who is going to be here. Do we really know who they are,” one local told CBS News as another spoke for counter-protesters, “No matter what they claim, they’re protesting migrants. They’re protesting people. And they’re protesting people who have every right to be in this city.”

Sunday’s demonstration was just the latest showing the increasing unrest of New Yorkers opposed to having the safety of their communities threatened by unvetted illegals as crime remained a serious concern.

Previously, residents of Staten Island had come out in an effort to block a busload of aliens from being delivered to the Midland Beach Nursing home for housing after showing up to protest the conversion of a school into a shelter.

The New York protests were far from unique as, recently, Chicagoans had shown up at a community meeting on the South Side to confront their alderman about a proposed shelter. What was meant to be affordable housing was potentially going to be used for illegal immigrants, and locals who voted overwhelmingly for Biden found out it was the president’s inaction that brought them to wonder, “…can’t we close the borders of Chicago or the state of Illinois in the first place?”

Meanwhile, in New York where Mayor Eric Adams (D) continued to call for bailouts from the state and federal coffers amid threats of citywide budget cuts to manage the projected $12 billion cost over three years, leftists like Naomi Sharlin of Jews for Radical Economic Justice continued to favor handouts for illegal aliens.

“As a Jew, we know what it is to be scapegoated, and migrants are being scapegoated,” she told the Post. “As Jewish people, we see this scapegoating and recognize that this is a failure of leadership. A leader who is failing and struggling decides to scapegoat instead of acknowledging that it’s a challenge and building coalitions.”

For his part, Sliwa slammed the counter-protesters as unaware of the dangers of the policies they promoted. Speaking with the newspaper, he said, “If you look at the demographics of both groups, on the one side, the pro-migrant group. They’re young progressive socialists for the most part. [On the other], these guys, senior citizens, many of them first-generation immigrants from Russia, Eastern Europe, who fled communism.”
