The authorities have identified the name of the militant, armed leftist protester who was killed by Georgia police on Wednesday.
As previously reported, Antifa-affiliated leftists have been occupying the forest space meant for the construction of the Atlanta Police Department Training Facility.
When local law enforcement began an operation this Wednesday to remove the protesters, one of them allegedly opened fire.
According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers “located a man inside a tent in the woods” at about 9:00 am.
“Officers gave verbal commands to the man who did not comply and shot a Georgia State Patrol Trooper. Other law enforcement officers returned fire, hitting the man. Law enforcement evacuated the Trooper to a safe area,” the release states.

The now-deceased man who opened fire first has since been identified as Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, 26.
His social media profiles show that he identified as an “artist, urban farmer, antifascist, venezolano, etc.”
According to a statement from the Atlanta Community Press Collective, some local left-wing group, Teran “spent their time between Atlanta, defending the forest from destruction and coordinating mutual aid for the movement and, and Florida where they helped build housing in low-income communities hit hardest by the hurricane.”
“They were a trained medic, a loving partner, a dear friend, a brave soul, and so much more,” the group said Thursday.

Not much else is known about Teran.
What’s known is that a number of his comrades were arrested Wednesday on domestic terrorism and criminal trespass charges.

What’s also known is that their mission to stop the construction of the Atlanta Police Department Training Facility has failed for the time being.
All of the protesters are reportedly part of the “Defend the Atlantic Forest” movement, a far-left group that is desperate to stop the 85-acre facility from being built.
“The movement is made of up people and groups of diverse views, but it is largely motivated by the shared perception that ecological destruction constitutes a grave threat to life on Earth, that it disproportionately affects disadvantaged groups such as Atlanta’s Black communities, and that rather than investing in solutions to the environmental crisis, governments are investing in heavier policing, especially of those disadvantaged groups,” the group’s website states.
Regarding Cop City, its name for the proposed police training facility, the group claims it’ll “be the largest police training facility in the United States and is slated to include a mock city where police will train with firearms, tear gas, helicopters, and explosive devices for protest and mass unrest like the 2020 George Floyd protests.”
“Cop City will hyper-militarize law enforcement, equipping police with a site to train for the suppression of Atlanta’s diverse Black and working-class communities,” the group argues.

Quoting Mike Register, the head of the GBI, USA Today reported on Wednesday that “[l]aw enforcement officials say people are illegally occupying the area and ‘have attempted to disguise’ crimes as protest.”
“There has been ‘growing criminal behavior and terroristic acts’ over the last several months,” according to USA Today.
The latest, prior to what happened this week, occurred last month when “officers arrested and charged five people with domestic terrorism and other charges at the site.”
“DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston said the arrests stemmed from ‘violent acts and trespassing,'” according to USA Today.
“There have been ‘more than four dozen instances of violent protests,’ including destruction of equipment and physical intimidation of workers, and nearly 50 people have been arrested for trespassing and throwing Molotov cocktails at police and construction workers,” USA Today added, this time quoting from the Atlanta Police Foundation.
“If there was not a threat to safety, we wouldn’t be out here, and we wouldn’t be expending all the resources that we are — all the way from the governor on down to local law enforcement,” Register said.
