Steve Bannon, who served as White House senior counselor to former President Donald Trump, spoke Sunday at the Turning Point Action 2023 Conference in West Palm Beach, Fla., and pushed what looks to be a common appeal to the GOP grassroots, which is that Trump is their instrument for retribution.
“We don’t have time for a diversion. We need to be focused right now on the election apparatuses in Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona and get behind Donald Trump and get serious about taking this country back,” Bannon said.
“This is a crusade! This is a Holy War against the Deep State!” Bannon screamed. “Donald Trump is our instrument for retribution! … Donald Trump is our instrument for righteous indignation!”

He would later tell the fired-up crowd, “We’ve got a fight ahead of us.”
“There’s still the primary, the RNC and the donors are going to try and [block] Trump, so we gotta get through that,” Bannon said. “The general election — and I don’t have to believe Biden will be the nominee, I think they’ll trade him out — but we’ve got nothing but a war in the general election, and then we gotta make sure they can’t steal it. And by the way, that’s the easy part…We’ve got six to eight years ahead of us of absolute political warfare.”
Trump pushed the retribution angle himslef back in March.
“In 2016, I declared: I am your voice. Today, I add: I am your warrior. I am your justice,” he said at the time. “And for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution.”
And he laid out what that retribution might include in a speech last month at his golf club in New Jersey, noting that “there was an unwritten rule” to not prosecute former presidents and political rivals.
“I will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of America, Joe Biden, and go after the Biden crime family,” Trump vowed.
