Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) boss Elon Musk sounded the alarm on Monday about the existence of what he calls “magic money computers.”
Appearing on Sen. Ted Cruz’s “Verdict” podcast, he spoke of discovering computers in several departments, including the State Department and Treasury Department, that he alleged “just make money out of thin air” through their blank-check authority.
“You may think that the government computers all talk to each other, they’re synchronized, they add up what funds are going where and it’s coherent and that the numbers you’re presented as a senator are the real numbers,” he explained.
“One would think. They’re not. I mean, they’re not totally wrong, But they’re probably off by 5 percent or 10 percent in some cases. I call a magic money computer any computer which can just make money out of thin air. It just issues payments,” he added.

These computers, of which there are reportedly at least 14 in the government, can allegedly produce money and then send it anywhere.
Bitcoin advocate Jameson Lopp was quick to jump on this finding.
“Bitcoin fixes this,” he tweeted after the podcast aired.
How?
“While Bitcoin has a limited supply of 21 million, there is no such limit on fiat currency,” according to The Street. “If a government prints more money in case of cash shortage, it can lead to currency debasement. That is why crypto proponents have long referred to Bitcoin as a hedge against currency degradation.”

Meanwhile, far-leftist Nathan J. Robinson, the editor of Current Affairs magazine, noted in a tweet that this idea of a “magic computer” fits in with Modern Monetary Theory. The theory basically suggests that governments don’t have to worry about debt since they can just print an endless amount of money.
“Ted Cruz and Elon Musk discover the bombshell fact that MMT is true,” Robinson tweeted.
The Debt Collective, a group that purports to be America’s “first debtors’ union,” also commented on Musk’s words.
Look:
They’re actually kinda correct. The federal government issues money out of thin air. It’s not like a household that needs to have a dollar before spending it. The gov is the *issuer* of the dollar—so it creates it. We can either use it to pay for healthcare or fund wars overseas. https://t.co/7APl6AumVf

Elsewhere on Cruz’s podcast, Musk expressed shock over all the waste he’s managed to find in the federal government within the span of just two months.
As just one of many examples, he talked about the proliferation of software licenses.
“So in every government department — I say every because we’ve not yet found a single exception — there are far too many software licenses and media subscriptions, meaning many more software licenses and media subscriptions than there are humans in the department,” he said.
“[DOGE] found entire situations of software licenses or media subscriptions where there were zero logins. The government’s paying for thousands of licenses of software or media subscriptions and no one had ever logged in even once,” he added.
Musk also mentioned an abundance of high-limit credit cards.
“We found that there are twice as many credit cards as there are humans, and I still don’t have a good explanation for why this is the case,” he said. “And these are ten thousand dollar limit cards. So it’s a lot of money.”
The hard part of fixing all this, he continued, is that it’s hard to tell whether money is being wasted or used fraudulently.
“You do have these sorts of gray areas,” he said. “For example, so we saw a lot of payments going out of Treasury that had no payment code and no explanation for the payment, and then we’re trying to figure out what that payment is.”
“And we’d see that, OK, that contract was supposed to be shut off, but someone forgot to shut off that contract and so the company kept getting money. Wow, now, is that waste or fraud? Or both?” he added.
