With recent polling suggesting Donald Trump would best President Joe Biden in a head-to-head matchup, the anti-Trump media has gone full bore into the fear-mongering stage, comparing the former president to madman Adolf Hitler and claiming that if he is elected again, not only will democracy die but America may never again see an election.
The marching orders have gone out and The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic have all run recent stories referencing a “Trump dictatorship” — neocon Robert Kagan went so far as to liken Trump to Caesar in his Wa-Po editorial: “Like Caesar, Trump wields a clout that transcends the laws and institutions of government, based on the unswerving personal loyalty of his army of followers.”
But Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume says not so fast.
In fact, Hume predicted on Fox News’ Special Report that Trump is more likely to deliver “defeat” than an autocracy.

“It’s all a little overwrought,” he said Monday. “We had four years of Donald Trump and blustered and bragged and threatened and so forth and, yet he didn’t bring us to the brink of dictatorship. And for all the excitement that was created by his activities after the election, which, he tried everything he could to try to remain in power, in the end, it failed. What was labeled an insurrection lasted about three or four hours. It was no match for the constitutional restraints that exist and would exist in a Trump second term.”
What’s more, Hume does not believe that Trump will prevail in 2024.
“I don’t think in a second term Trump would have much luck even if he tried to drive the country toward a dictatorship. He’s more likely to drive the Republicans to a defeat at the hands of Joe Biden than he is to drive the country toward dictatorship,” he concluded.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
I’m no fan of the former president. But next they’ll be telling us the Earth is flat and we’re supposed to believe it.

They’re clearly firing up their base to set up impeachment proceedings again. Trump voters be dammed.

How in the world would a Trump dictatorship look different than the current dictatorship?
If he does try to run the country like a dictator I’m sure voters from all affiliations will start paying attention to what the career politicians are doing. The swamp from both sides drain— Robert Craig III (@r_craig2214) December 5, 2023
