Brit Hume warns GOP to stop overpromising on Biden probes, tells chair to ‘get off television’

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume asserted on Wednesday that House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) may be overhyping investigations into President Biden and bluntly suggested he should stop appearing on television.

Comer has been making the rounds on television recently discussing the emerging probes into the Biden administration.

In November, he was asked by Fox News what his top three priorities would be and two of them had to do with the president.

“Obviously, Biden family influence-peddling because we believe this is a national security risk,” Comer told Fox News at the time. “And then the border, the debacle at the border.”

Comer is also focusing on Biden’s mishandling of classified material and is vowing his committee will investigate him over it, including any connections to the Chinese government that may be uncovered.

He slammed the president and his team on Sunday for their handling of classified documents, announcing on CNN’s “State of the Union” that he is requesting additional information concerning the situation.

“We would never have known about the possession of the classified documents were it not for investigative reporting by CBS that somehow got a leak to determine that this had happened prior to the election,” the Kentucky Republican told CNN host Jake Tapper. “So the administration hasn’t been transparent about what’s going on with President Biden’s possession of classified documents. And we just want equal treatment here with respect to how both former President (Donald) Trump and current President Biden are being treated with the document issue.”

The National Archives also told congressional investigators on Tuesday that it won’t share documents with lawmakers without a green light from the Justice Department according to the Washington Examiner.

Debra Steidel Wall, who is the acting archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration, told Comer that the newly appointed special counsel investigating the document discovery would have to approve any records or interviews given to the committee.

“Our desire to provide you with as much information as we can, however, must also be balanced with the need to protect Executive branch equities, particularly as they relate to ongoing criminal law enforcement investigations by DOJ,” Wall wrote in a letter to Comer throwing yet another roadblock in front of Republicans investigating Biden.

On Fox News’ “Special Report,” Hume cautioned House Republicans to “proceed judiciously.”

“If these House investigators want to proceed judiciously, they might want to think about Mr. Comer. And it might be a good idea for him to get off television a while, delve into the material here, and when he finds something, maybe tell us about it then,” he contended.

“So far what he’s doing basically is hyping these investigations. He runs the risk of appearing to be nothing but a partisan about it, which is something the Republicans can’t afford because when that starts to happen, the press will be all over these Republicans,” Hume warned.

Fox News host Bret Baier appeared to be in agreement with Hume’s assessment.

“And that is the risk, right?” anchor Bret Baier stated. “Going over their skis, promising too much. They can’t deliver.”

“That’s exactly right,” Hume asserted. “Of course, if they were Democrats, they could say whatever they want. Doesn’t matter. Look at Adam Schiff, for example. He spouted out all kinds of claims about what he was going to find on Donald Trump during the investigations of the election and the alleged Russia collusion. It turned out despite his claims, he never had any of it. But you know, he kept on straight up banners flying… press continued to listen to him.”
