CBS reporter presses Tom Homan on ICE detainees without extra charges — his answer is blunt: ‘Then they are deportable’

Tom Homan shut down the illusion that some illegal aliens should somehow be immune from deportation during a tense exchange.

The border czar was speaking with CBS News immigration correspondent Camilo Montoya-Galvez when he was presented with a claim about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees.

Watch:

“[Rep. Maria Salazar] cited the statistic that 50% of ICE detainees don’t have a criminal charge or a conviction,” he said.

“Are they in the country illegally?” Homan asked.

“Yes,” the correspondent answered.

“Then they are deportable by federal law,” Homan said, explaining what should be very basic common sense.

“But so are millions of people, right?” Montoya-Galvez pressed.

“Yeah,” Homan responded flatly. “If you’re in the country illegally, you got a problem. You shouldn’t be here.”

There seems to be a common belief among leftists that illegals should have to commit other crimes, preferably violent ones, in order to qualify for deportation. They appear to think that violating federal law isn’t a serious problem, and the longer the illegal immigrant flies under the radar of authorities, the less valid an excuse it is to deport the person.
