Cheryl Hines says denying Secret Service protection for husband RFK Jr is ‘political strategy’

Cheryl Hines isn’t just an actress and comedian — she’s Robert Kennedy Jr.’s wife, and she says the Biden administration’s refusal to grant the Independent presidential candidate Secret Service protection feels “political.”

Hines, who starred as Larry David’s wife, Cheryl, on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” was home with her husband on Wednesday when an intruder jumped a fence at the Brentwood estate not once, but twice.

“It was very alarming,” she told TMZ.

Hines was on Instagram Live with her friend when she first spotted the intruder.

“I can see out my window a very strange person,” she recalled, “And I see the security apprehending him while I’m talking. “It was, yes, very alarming.”

She said she didn’t initially realize “the severity” of the situation, so she continued with the Instagram discussion.

“I actually just stopped talking for a moment and was staring outside and my jaw dropped,” she said, adding that her friend asked if she was okay.

Hines told TMZ that their private security “had it under control.”

The security guard “apprehended the person, and then I could hear someone say, ‘Call 911,” she said.

As reported, the frightening encounter didn’t end there.

The intruder was arrested, released, and, on the same day, returned to the home and attempted again to gain access.

The incident prompted Kennedy to ask Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, for the third time, for Homeland Security to provide him with Secret Service protection —  something that has been extended to presidential candidates since Kennedy’s father, Robert F. Kennedy Sr., was tragically assassinated in 1968.

Given the Kennedy family history — his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was also famously assassinated — Hines says it is “disappointing to say the very least that the [Biden] administration is not giving Bobby protection.”

With respect to threats made against her husband, Hines noted that “everything has been documented along the way” and Kennedy has been “communicating” with the administration.

“They know,” she said. “They know what’s been happening, so, yeah… I can’t believe that they’re not responding.”

Hines admitted to TMZ that she was choosing her words “carefully.”

“I’m being careful about my words because, you know, I respect President Biden and the administration,” she said, “and, at the same time, it feels like it’s political strategy.”

“If they do give Bobby protection, then they are acknowledging that he’s running as a political candidate,” she reasoned, adding that Kennedy is “pulling and at a high percentage.”

She pointed to another frightening incident Kennedy recently had while giving a speech in Los Angeles.

An armed man posing as a U.S. Marshal attempted to approach Kennedy before being detained by his private security and arrested by the LAPD.

“I’m not sure what it’s going to take to get the administration to…” she said before her voice trailed off.

“I mean, I know that Bobby’s a different person,” she said.

“He’s very brave and nothing seems to rattle him, but I am very concerned about it,” she admitted. “There are people out there that have issues, and the only thing we can do is protect Bobby and the people around him.”

“It takes a lot of effort to do that,” she continued, “and, of course, the Secret Service — this is exactly what they do, and they are trained in this. So, you would think that this is exactly what they should be doing.

“It’s really disappointing.”
