Chris Christie likens Jared Kushner to Hunter Biden; Comer agrees Trump’s son-in-law crossed the line

GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie appears to believe Trump family member Jared Kushner is the Hunter Biden of the right.

Appearing at an event in New Hampshire this week, he argued that some of Kushner’s actions during the Trump administration were equivalent to Hunter’s actions during the Obama administration.

As an example, he asked why Kushner was chosen to broker a Middle East peace deal versus the more established figures in the administration.

“Why would you send Jared Kushner to the Middle East when you have Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo as secretaries of state? Two incredibly accomplished men. You send him? Why?” Christie asked.

“We found out the answer six months after he left office. Two billion dollars from the Saudis to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. And because he did all this and more with his family, he’s normalizing this conduct,” he continued.

Listen:

It’s true that Kushner earned $2 billion from the Saudis only months after leaving the Trump administration.

“Six months after leaving the White House, Jared Kushner secured a $2 billion investment from a fund led by the Saudi crown prince, a close ally during the Trump administration, despite objections from the fund’s advisers about the merits of the deal,” The New York Times confirmed last year.

Continuing his remarks, Christie then argued that this profiting from overseas entities is no different than what Hunter Biden had done.

“And now we have another president who’s doing exactly the same thing. And allowing Hunter Biden to run roughshod, making money from foreign governments and selling access to Joe Biden,” he said.

He added that he’d never allow his family members to do the same thing.

“I got asked today by some reporter, ‘What would you do to make sure that didn’t happen?’ The easy answer would be don’t let my family anywhere near the White House after I win. But that’s not what I would do, because I’m a leader, and my family respects me, and I respect them,” he said.

“I’d look everyone in the eye and say, ‘Nobody gets a job in this government and nobody makes any money off of what I’m doing for the American people.’ That will be the rule of my administration. I’m going to end this family grift that’s going on,” he added.

Finally, he concluded with a direct attack on former President Donald Trump.

“We are not a third-world republic. We are the United States of America. And it’s time for Donald Trump’s family to get off the public dole and go back to New York where they belong,” he said.

The problem with his argument is that Hunter’s behavior (which occurred during the Obama administration) preceded Kushner’s behavior (which occurred under the Trump administration), and so if anyone is guilty of normalizing this behavior, it’s the Biden family.

Plus, according to House Oversight Committee chair James Comer, a top Republican, there’s one key difference between Kushner’s actions and Biden’s actions.

I have been vocal that I think that what Kushner did crossed the line of ethics, but what Christie said, it happened after he left office. Still no excuse, Jake, but it happened after he left office. And Jared Kushner actually has a legitimate business,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday.

“This money from the Bidens happened while Joe Biden was vice president, while he was flying to those countries. Look, days after he left Romania, his family started receiving wires from a corrupt Romanian foreign national. Days, Jake. Like four days after he left, including his granddaughter. What’s his granddaughter doing getting a wire from a Romanian foreign national?” he added.

These remarks came a day after Comer announced that he intends to subpoena members of the Biden family, including potentially the president himself.

Appearing on Fox Business Network this Wednesday, he told host Maria Bartiromo that he intends to eventually subpoena the president and his family about their overseas business dealings.

“This is always going to end with the Bidens coming in front of the committee. We are going to subpoena the family. We know that this is going to end up in court when we subpoena the Bidens, so we’re putting together a case, and I think we’ve done that very well. We’ve shown the bank records,” he said.

He also explained why he hadn’t already subpoenaed the Bidens.

“If I subpoenaed Joe and Hunter Biden the first day I became chairman of the committee, it would have been tied up in court and the judge would have eventually thrown it out. We’ve had to go every step of the way and prove that media narrative was wrong. And the vice president and the current president lied,” he said.

“We have caught Joe Biden in so many lies. I can’t even count the number of lies now. So we have put together a case that I think would stand up in any court of law in America,” he added.
