Civil rights complaint accuses conservative activist of misgendering ‘ze/zir’ school official

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo has been named in a civil rights complaint filed against New College in Florida claiming that he misgendered a school official by not using ze/zir pronouns.

Rufo was appointed to the school’s board by Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) in January along with six other conservatives, according to the New York Post. The appointments were made in an effort to eradicate Critical Race Theory and “woke” ideology from state schools.

President Biden’s Department of Education launched an investigation into New College after receiving a complaint in August that asserted the school’s board had fostered a “hostile” environment for transgender and disabled students and staff.

The complaint naming Rufo was received by the DOE’s Office for Civil Rights on Aug. 24. In it, Rufo is accused of specifically targeting students, parents, and staff with “sexist and transphobic ridicule.”

A copy of the seemingly frivolous complaint that Rufo posted on his Substack claims in one incident that he allegedly “mocked and misgendered” the director of New College’s Office of Outreach and Inclusive Excellence (OOIE), Yoleidy Rosario-Hernandez after “ze was summarily fired.”

“Ze is a neopronoun, which is a form of personal pronoun preferred by some non-binary individuals who don’t feel that conventional pronouns — including they/them — accurately represent their gender identity,” the New York Post explained.

Rufo ostensibly noted in a March post made to X that Rosario-Hernandez used the preferred pronoun before referring to the official as “her” and “she” in the next sentence.

“New College of Florida has fired its former DEI director, Yoleidy Rosario-Hernandez (“ze/zir”), after abolishing her department,” Rufo posted to X. “Rosario-Hernandez lashed out at me in the Washington Post, but I wish her well and hope she uses the opportunity to develop useful skills.”

“Rufo is also named in the complaint as allegedly stating that LGBTQ+ people have ‘synthetic sexual political identities’ and that transgender people have ‘personal psychopathologies,'” the New York Post noted.

“Trustee Rufo mocks transgender students, calls New College students mentally ill, and blames their mothers,” the complaint reportedly states.

Evidently, a whole list of perceived slighters was listed in the complaint as well.

“A plethora of other ‘hostility’ against marginalized groups at New College was cited in the complaint, including the removal of gender-neutral bathroom signage and the abolishment of the college’s diversity program,” the New York Post continued.

The board is being accused by radical leftists of being “overtly hostile towards New College students, faculty, and staff on the basis of race, gender, religion, and disability.”

Rufo blasted the investigation on Friday. He asserts that it has no merit and won’t hold up.

He also noted that the complainant alleged that defunding the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) department and the Gender Studies Program constituted a violation of civil rights law.

“This is a brazen attempt to subvert the democratic governance of New College and entrench left-wing ideological programs under the guise of civil rights law,” Rufo wrote on Substack.

“The Biden Administration has demonstrated repeatedly that it is willing to weaponize the federal law enforcement apparatus against school board parents and other conservative reformers,” Rufo justifiably charged.
