CNN anchor Abby Phillip seemed genuinely saddened by a Gold Star mother’s assertion that President Joe Biden has never contacted her family, despite attempts to reach out to him.
Gold Star mother Christy Shamblin, who was invited by Texas Rep. Michael McCaul to Biden’s State of the Union address Thursday, bluntly told the CNN host that the president has had no contact with the family after the death of her daughter-in-law, Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee, who was one of the 13 servicemembers killed in the terrorist attack during Biden’s disastrous evacuation from Afghanistan.
“He does talk to families that have lost loved ones because of his own experiences,” Phillip told Shamblin, evidently pointing to the family losses Biden has personally experienced.
Shamblin’s response was a curt, “no” when the CNN anchor asked if she had experienced the president as a “consoler-in-chief.”

“Have you spoken to him?” Phillip asked.
“No. He’s not reached out to our family,” Shamblin revealed. “We’ve actually reached out to the White House and have never heard back. We asked to meet with them to understand where their thinking was in calling this a success, and we’ve not received a response. It’s been months.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Phillip replied.
Shamblin expressed that she hoped to hear Biden address key issues during the SOTU address Thursday, but was likely disappointed by Biden’s angry speech that seemed more like campaign rhetoric.
“I want to hear how he’s going to strengthen our armed forces and support them and answer our questions and lead to a thorough investigation like he promised, so we can move forward in a positive way and make it better,” Shamblin said.
McCaul, the Republican Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, was also on the CNN set with the Gold Star mom.

“More than two years after the death of Christy’s daughter-in-law and 12 other U.S. servicemembers at Abbey Gate, the Biden administration still refuses to take accountability for the tragedy it caused,” McCaul said in a statement ahead of Biden’s State of the Union.
“I hope Christy’s attendance sends a clear signal to President Biden and the American people that I will not rest until a complete and thorough investigation has occurred — and that people are held accountable for what happened,” the GOP chairman added.
McCaul announced a full Committee hearing scheduled for next week with Gen. Mark Milley, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the former Commander of United States Central Command. The hearing is focused on the Afghanistan withdrawal.
Shamblin’s experienced reality exposed Phillip’s portrait of a sympathetic Biden and sparked an animated response on X.
